Daverse 175
Hi guys, Im currently rebuilding my head, just had new guides and seals pressed in, and now im going about lapping the new valves in. My question is, should the new valves sit this high up in the seats? or would it have to be regrinded? also, two valves in particular, an inlet and an exhaust, are really hard to push in, and need real force to pull out, any ideas on what i can do for this?Cheers guys
Lowlifedubber 9
If youve had new guides put in and your using new valves id be inclined to take it back to the machine shop and get them ground in.
Daverse 175
well it wasnt actually a machine shop that put my guides in, it was my local garage that had a press. any ideas on who could do it for me?
Lowlifedubber 9
Northern Road Engineering in Newark.Really good engineers there mate and not too far from us.Its where i will be getting my head skimmed and new guides put in.
Daverse 175
Ok cheers mate, il have a bell with them, if your after having your head skimmed, specialist tooling services did mine for £20 or £30 iirc, and literally cant be more then half a mile from you! on doddington road where intel is? Lowlifedubber 9
Ah yeah they are just round the corner lol.Have they done a good job?Had a straight edge down it?
Daverse 175
Havent checked it but the head wasnt warped when i took it in, did a decent job of it as well, il have a look later with a straight edge
Lowlifedubber 9
Now then Dave ive been doing a lot of research recently about skimmed heads etc and ive found countless people saying f you have your head skimmed you need to get your valves reground otherwise they sit proud!I think this may be your problem dude.Im taking mine to be skimmed tomorrow.Ive also read that you have to skim the same amount off the top cam chain cover(lower piece) toherwise it interferes with the lower cover.Just thought id mention it. Daverse 175
Yeah i guess thats whats happened, they sit far too high and just dont look right. Where are you going for your skim then? I ran a straightedge down my head earlier and its flat as a pancake, apart from the ill sitting valves of course haha. Hmm iv never heard of skimming the cam cover before, interesting though, but a skim is only what a thousandth of an inch? Not sure if it would effect it that much, surely the gasket would take the extra bit? If that makes sense!
Lowlifedubber 9
Im going to the same place you did mate as its just round the corner.I will be asking them how much they have taken off for my records but cam cover problem shouldnt bother me as i will be using a head spacer.I know its not a lot but i thought i would tell you. When i go today im going to ask them if they can fit me larger valve seats if i supply them. Daverse 175
Ah ok, yeah they'll do. Good job and i thought quite reasonable too. Yeah its definitely worth thinking about, maybe just putting some rtv / copper spray on the gasket to make up for any differences? I believe i asked them when i did mine and i think they said no, i think it was them anyway. Any thoughts on the jammed valves?? This is really annoying me!Edit: just rang up northern road engineering, they said theyll regrind the seats and lap them in for 60, a lot better thrn i thought it would be! Lowlifedubber 9
Excellent. They really know their stuff although when I mentioned putting bigger valve seats in they said don't bother.
Daverse 175
Yeah in fairness i mentioned it to stealth and they said they dont bother supplying bigger valves becuase its not worth the money as VRT's get massive amounts of power anyway
Lowlifedubber 9
Hmmm i may think again about it and just go for hardened springs and retainers etc.Dropped my head off at Specialist tooling at 10pm,told me to collect it at 2pm lolGot it back and they have done a real good job.Had to take 20 thou off it though! Daverse 175
Yeah they do have a fast turn around, why did they have to take so much off? Warped?
Lowlifedubber 9
There was a bit of pitting between the water jacket holes so i asked to get it all out.As soon as i decide what valves to get i will pop it to northern road engineering for them to be ground in.
