vr666 1
seems like more than a few on here have experience of chargers, basically im lookin to know what the running costs are and more importantly how reliable these things are, bear in mind my wee car gets drove on the limit frequently, im talkin serious wound right out up and down the box etc, mate had g60 and he mentioned to me that my driving style wouldnt suit charger in his opinion ( not to mention his! hes a cheek to say im hard on a motor lol) said they dont really like that sort of abuse, im lookin honest opinions from those who run them and maybe drive them hard ( track days etc for eg) over a fair period of time, any thoughts would be much appreciated
simey 0
I've got a ZR2 charger and its been 100% reliable but as I use the VR for track a standard engine can't take hard punishment and I've just the enngine rebuilt with a lower compression ratio, APR bolts, baffled sump in order to take it.I've nearly finished the running in and once engine has been checked by Vince it will be fully stripped, roll caged and a trip to Spa Fran'champs is on
mightyvr6 0
I'm not a regular trackday driver but I've done some pretty hard laps of the nurburgring and the car and charger withstood the punishment as it has done for the last 30k miles the charger has been on the car. No reliability issues but I don't thrash my car all the time and try to be sympathetic to the mechanical bits. The charger can take it all day long but the engine is the possible weakpoint. Having said that a standard engine which is constantly thrashed also potentially has a shorter lifespan.
MK2R32 0
I'd say it's all down to a good quality oil, which should be changed more frequently when a charger is fitted. In std form the VR6 engine should easily withstand 250bhp all day long because most std s/c conversions only run at a low boost pressure 5/6psi. simey 0
250bhp is alright for a standard VR engine but there's always a few other mods that have to be done, pushing the power to 270/280 8)
vr666 1
cheers lads, with 124k on the engine its comming near that time for a spruce up, wee car is still going the very best but im tryin to look at all angles and get as much info as poss to help me decide which route to go down, not doing any work myself as im not mechanically minded ( the mate does the work, has pulled me out of many holes and saved me a fortune along the way, hes built all manner of golfs that all went well (others too such as a mk2 escort with a red top pushin 197bhp @wheels badged as 1.3ghia 8) mint machine) but i do enjoy the drivin side immensly! what kind of daily drivin fuel consumption are you getting with the charger? is it bad bad or livable? whats it like gettin the power down too, is an lsd required? simey 0
I'm managing 34mpg with my charrger but thats keeping the revs under 3k, getting power down is ok as well but I'm running an auto box so can't comment for manual.
Devilfish 0
34 MPG with a charger and an auto box! that seems awfully good!
mightyvr6 0
34 mpg is unrealistic but 32 is achievable on motorway journeys. The average is more like 24 mpg.
simey 0
Devilfish, there's a way to drive an auto box to achieve 34 mpg, either the maf is knacked or Vince is building fuel economy engines
mark@vagworx 0
My mpg is usually around the 23-25mpg mark for combined driving with the charger on. Wind it up and that's a different story.....i've seen as low as 10mpg on mine!I've got a manual box, and if you drive it hard from a stand still then traction in 1st, 2nd and some of 3rd is limited to say the least!
