Bit of advice/info on overbored engine i have just bought please.

Recommended Posts

Morning lads.Right i picked up my 2 engines i bought off a guy out Spalding Lincolnshire way on.

He bought them together in a clearance auction from an old guy that was a vw specialist who had retired and wrapped his business up from Holbeach.

One is just a 2.8vr6 AAA vr6 engine complete but with no ancillaries.

The other is a 3.0 over bore with 82.48 (sp.003) pistons,unknown rods,crank and a bare head.

Ive had the calipers in the bores and they measure out at 83.05mm.

My aim is to build a 250bhp lump N/A over the summer, and when i take the car off the road for winter i will be putting it in.Once up and running i shall use it for a few months and then go for a supercharger.

All the ancillaries i shall buy separate over the coming months with the view to strip and either polish or powdercoat.but thats not my concern at the minute.I have a few questions so i will fire away.

Whislt searching for some info on the Mahle pistons i came across this thread.

"Evening all! I've just stripped my old Grant Motorsport engine for spares due to light scoring of the bores and head gasket failure etc. I've sourced a low compression zero miles engine as a replacement which will be charged so I've got these up for grabs. They are 82.48mm pistons, & the attatched rods. I have no idea if either the pistons or rods are forged, or even what they are worth to be honest.

I've got the block that these came out of too. You may get away with a light hone and a set of rings. The engine only smoked on start up as the valve stem oil seals were knackered.

This engine made 217.7 bhp at stealth.

So there we have it, a set of oversize pistons, rods, block and crank etc.

As I said I have absolutely no idea what this is all worth so for the sake of putting a price up lets say £400. (prob not worth that but I have to put a price up!)

Any comments or advice welcome! "

On closer inspection it turns out quite randomly that this is MY engine!

Here it is with the other engine now in my garage.

Anyway the questions:

Ive checked the bores and really cant see any visable scoring, with them being @ 83.05mm would i be safe getting them bored out a touch more just to be on the safe side?

If i did this would i be able to fit slightly oversize rings in the Mahle 82.48 pistons?

If not would i get away with a light hone like the guy suggested?

Can anyone identify the pistons/rods as being anything special? If not i will just get some new ones.

Regarding new wrist pins,small/big end bearings, shells etc would standard ones be ok?Or am i better off getting these spec'd up?

Is there a particular guy/company you guys use for bore testing, magnafluxing and for headwork ie port polish big valves etc?

Thats it for now, sorry for all the questions,im really anal when doing anything so im going to be here all the time asking for advice. So i will help out a bit and become a Premium member as sonn as ive clicked send on this post.

If anyone is interested heres a build thread for the car.

Thanks very much Andi!

Looking forward to my sticker now.Although im not allowed to put it on until the engine is built and in the car ha ha.

Im just in the process of fabricating some seat subframes for some leather heated&electric RX8 seats and then i can crack on with this engine build.

Been scouring the internet for 2 days solid now (on top of working a 34 hour weekend)

Information overload comes to mind ha ha.

Ah right ok,cheers Dave,so all i need to do regarding ordering new rings is get in touch with Mahle, tell them i have their 82.48mm pistons and would like some rings for a 83.50 bore vr6 lump?

I will be having a play in the garage all day tomorrow so will pop the pistons in the bores and see how they sit. Will crack on with getting a valve out too.

After a lot of stalking ive finally got a reply off the owner of this engine from a few years ago!

"Hello mate! Sorry for the delayed response, been moving house and only just got tinternet. The basics of My knowledge of the engine were in the original advert.

I bought the car nearly 5 years ago now rom a Guy over Reading way. When I bought the car, the guy didn't know much about it, He only bought the car cos it looked nice!

I did a bit of digging as it had a club gti sticker in the window, and got a response rom a guy who knew the guy that built it many years ago.

He basically said that if the block was still blue in colour then it still had the grant motorsport engine in it. Sure enough it did. And it went well too, making 217.7 bhp.

I took the car off the road nearly 2 years ago to do a simple head gasket change as there was an oil leak from the side of the head, and it was smoking in the morning on start up due to valve stem oil seals. When I took the head off, I noticed the bores were slightly scored, and didn't want to risk rebuiding everything incase it was no good after. The project was put on hold and a mate of mine offered Me a newly built forged motor, so it made sense to buy his and charge it rather than rebuild the one you now have!

You can see the car it came from in the mk2's for sale section. I've now taken a deposit on the car which I'm gutted about but needs must at the mo.

I can't remember who bought the engine off Me. All I know is that He was from the North somewhere, and it was His sister who collected the engine off me and off it went in the back of her clio.

Sorry I can't be of much help about the engine itself. Hope you manage to rebuild it, let Me know the progress!

Good luck mate, Ash"

So there we go,looks like it is a Grant Motorsport engine.Ive checked the bores and there is a minute amount of scoring so im going to get them honed and the rings matched to the bores and i will take it from there.Result!

It also came out of this car which he has just sold.Looks nice too!
