Russ_vr6 12
Iv tried a seach but a bit difficult to find the answers I need The modidlfications on my Golf engine wise are:a make of unknown uprated camshaftsuprated exhaust manifoldinduction kitdecatscorpion exhaustNow power wise it pulls very well from idle, but really gets going after 4000rpm - iv not found the current rev limit, it spins very quickly round to circa 7000 rpm through must gears - im putting this down to the cams as my previous modified VR with standard internals would run out of pull around 6300-6500.Anyhoo, what im asking is:What is a 'safe' rev limit for mine? I know the rev counter shows 6300 rpm as the red line, but does anyone know what the engine is safe to rev to? Is it valve train or bottom end that causes issues at higher revs? filtee 0
Just rev it till it dies. Its fine
filtee 0
Till the revs die, not the engine that is.
michael5556 247
Usually about 6500 unless it's had head work such as larger valves and parted etc. cams will just give you a bit more higher rev power. The will probably be 268 degree ones for 4000.
Russ_vr6 12
Thank you - so higher than 6500 is putting strain on valve train im going to hazard a guess at?
russj249 2
Titanium valve spring etc would be highly recommended for anything over the standard rev limiter.
michael5556 247
Yeah unless it's had some good work done do it such as valves, springs, retainers etc.
Russ_vr6 12
Hmmm, ok guys thanks for the info - is there a limit for rods/pistons? Im guessing circa 7000 rpm?
russj249 2
From what I know, rods and pistons, crank etc are ok, however definitely get a set of ARP con rod bolts. I have them on mine and are a must for turbos and anything else non standard.Send a message to Jim Potter on here, he should be able to point you in the right direction and probably supply most of the bits. Russ_vr6 12
Cheers matey, Im not planning on any big engine modifications, just more reliability really
michael5556 247
Definitely go for the bolts as said above. I have them all around and are very good!
russj249 2
Yea I understand what you mean get yourself a Mocal oil cooler too.. if your using it on the track, it'll be worth the money. A 13 row cooler should be ok, and run it with a therostatic sandwich plate. Don't want it getting too cold, but anything over 115 degrees on a regular basis, you could do with one. Russ_vr6 12
True, the list of things keeps on growing lol.I had one on my Clio - Wish I had kept it now grrr
russj249 2
lol, best to me safe though.. I have a brand one at home, I bought it for when I did my turbo conversion last month, only thing is that at the moment my oil temp is ok, but come spring and summer I might be needing it! Russ_vr6 12
Makes sense mate, what bhp/torque are you running? and what viscosity oil?
russj249 2
I am not running particularly high performance compared to some, as its my daily car, so no forged bottom end. Cold journeys on forget stuff everyday would kill the engine in no time! No time for the pistons to expand, just be slappin' away all the time. The best oil you can get for charged or n/a is VW's Synta Silver, however not sure if you can get this anymore.. as for power, im running 360bhp and 340ft lbs of torque. A fair few on here are above those figures though.
russj249 2
Oh and 10w 40 lol.. the best all round oil really. You could use a 5w 30 or a 5w 40, but these engines are pretty old now, and some of the newer full synthetic oils are too thin, and ones it starts leakin it ain't gonna stop lol
Russ_vr6 12
Yeah you can get Silver, Im a parts manager so i get good discount Thats good power, what was needed for that mate?
russj249 2
A fair bit of work! Lower compression, custom manifolds and custom 3 inch exhaust. Garrett GT3583r ball bearing turbo, 500cc injectors and a hell of a lot more! These engines will take it all day long, providing you are reasonable with them. ARP bolts are must, anything to make it stronger really. Bottom ends are good for 400+ without any major mods.Supercharging a vr6 is a lot cheaper, and a hell of a lot easier, but not as much power or torque from the same boost.. and I have no problems with anyone who supercharged their car, but do see a lot of charged ones and I wanted to do one that is unique by fabricating the whole thing myself. Russ_vr6 12
Yeah I can appreciate that mate, I need a trip out in a F/I VR
russj249 2
Yes.. but then you'll want one
