few rev related questions

Recommended Posts

Iv tried a seach but a bit difficult to find the answers I need

The modidlfications on my Golf engine wise are:

a make of unknown uprated camshafts

uprated exhaust manifold

induction kit

decat

scorpion exhaust

Now power wise it pulls very well from idle, but really gets going after 4000rpm - iv not found the current rev limit, it spins very quickly round to circa 7000 rpm through must gears - im putting this down to the cams as my previous modified VR with standard internals would run out of pull around 6300-6500.

Anyhoo, what im asking is:

What is a 'safe' rev limit for mine? I know the rev counter shows 6300 rpm as the red line, but does anyone know what the engine is safe to rev to? Is it valve train or bottom end that causes issues at higher revs?

From what I know, rods and pistons, crank etc are ok, however definitely get a set of ARP con rod bolts. I have them on mine and are a must for turbos and anything else non standard.

Send a message to Jim Potter on here, he should be able to point you in the right direction and probably supply most of the bits.

Yea I understand what you mean :) get yourself a Mocal oil cooler too.. if your using it on the track, it'll be worth the money. A 13 row cooler should be ok, and run it with a therostatic sandwich plate. Don't want it getting too cold, but anything over 115 degrees on a regular basis, you could do with one.

I am not running particularly high performance compared to some, as its my daily car, so no forged bottom end. Cold journeys on forget stuff everyday would kill the engine in no time! No time for the pistons to expand, just be slappin' away all the time.

The best oil you can get for charged or n/a is VW's Synta Silver, however not sure if you can get this anymore.. as for power, im running 360bhp and 340ft lbs of torque. A fair few on here are above those figures though.

A fair bit of work! Lower compression, custom manifolds and custom 3 inch exhaust. Garrett GT3583r ball bearing turbo, 500cc injectors and a hell of a lot more! These engines will take it all day long, providing you are reasonable with them. ARP bolts are must, anything to make it stronger really. Bottom ends are good for 400+ without any major mods.

Supercharging a vr6 is a lot cheaper, and a hell of a lot easier, but not as much power or torque from the same boost.. and I have no problems with anyone who supercharged their car, but do see a lot of charged ones and I wanted to do one that is unique by fabricating the whole thing myself.
