Slim 0
I was looking through the folder of receipts I got with my '95 Highline last night and noticed an invoice I didn't pay much attention to at first (I didn't really know much about the engine when I bought the car so it didn't stand out too much) from 2000. The invoice was for a new head gasket, 2 timing chains and a tensioner and a heap of exhaust and inlet valves to get replaced. That seems kinda worrying for a car that was 5 years old and probably hadn't done more than 45,000 miles at the time, and the total of the invoice was £678 including VAT which seems suspiciously cheap. The car drives fine enough though, and no expense has been spared maintaining the car, every repair since has been done by a VW dealer, so am I worrying about nothing? acf8181 0
i bet you the garage took advantage of a clueless owner, who thought it was like a timing belt and needed changing at 45k.so nothing to worry about.

stu h 0
well with valves inc aswell it does make you think snapped chain......on the plus side - the tensioners aint that old!
acf8181 0
ooh, yeah, missed that bit...you gotta assume the chain snapped. but why this would be the case at that low mileage is a weird one. even with serious abuse and poor oil you wouldn't expect them to snap. maybe there was a dodgy chain put on it, only thing i can think of.
