malcolm 0
Can anyone confirm re automatic gearbox. When mine goes into top gear , sometimes appears to stick in 3rd and then their is a screech and it goes into top. I am assuming that when it locks up in top gear it is done by a solenoid ( that would explain the screeching ). Anyone know how this works, I am assuming the ECU will send a signal to solenoid , possibly via a relay to operate and lock up in top gear,
malcolm 0
Guys, anyone with Bentley manual, does it describe how automatic gearbox works, thinking if my assumption is correct that it will show wiring re solenoid etc and describe how it works.
trackman 0
Sorry mate, not sure exactly how it works. Had a quick look in the Bentley. It says you can reset the TCM (Transmission Control Module) back to basic settings on the VAG1551 or by doing the following.Turn ignition on but don't start engine.Press accelerator pedal to floor (make sure carpets don't stop it) for minimum of 5 seconds.Release accelerator pedal and switch off ignition.Probably worth a try.I had a similar prob in my Corrado VR6 Auto. It also used to change gear several times whilst going round roundabouts at speed. Never got to the bottom of it before it went back to the dealers. The Bentley also says that there were two transmissions fitted to VR6s. An 096 and an 01M. They used different ATF fluid. The 096 uses Dexron ATF whilst the 01M uses a special VW-only ATF. Dexron is purple / brownish in color, whilst VW ATF is yellowish.Hope this helps.Rich
amit 0
I HAVE AN AUTO. HAD TO HAVE A RE-BUILD DONE LAST YEAR. NORMALL THE AUTO'S DO NEED ONE AROUND 70K (ish). AFTER THE WORK WAS DONE, I COLLECTED THE CAR, I NOTICED I USED TO GET SCREECHES WHEN THE GEARS CHANGED. I DIDNT TAKE MUCH NOTICE OF IT. THE SECOND WEEK I NOTICED THE CAR WAS PULLING OF IN HIGH GEARS. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE GARAGE AND THEY PUT IT ON THEIR DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE WHICH SHOWED A INTERMITENT PROBELM WITH A SOLENOID. (DONT KNOW WHICH ONE). AS I WAS DRIVING AROUND WITH AN AUTO CAR STUCK IN A HIGH GEAR THE GEARBOX BURNT OUT AGAIN.TOOK IT BACK TO THE GARAGE AND THIS TIME THEY SORTED OUT THE GEARBOX AND FITTED A NEW SOLENOID UNDER WARRANTY. ITS BEEN OK SINCE. (TOUCHWOOD!)
