noise when braking/accelerating

clunking noise when braking accelerating, its on an auto but from what i have read could be a mount on its way out.

how much movement should there be when rocking/pushing the engine and whats the best way to test ?

any other things it could be ?

Open the bonnet and rev the engine gently ,shes a big girl but well restrained any noticeable movement will be evident ,if its not the mounts then check driveshafts/wishbones for play.

right ok and when checking the driveshafts what kind of movement am i looking for ? driveshafts have been off twice since the gearbox has been in and out a few times and one of the cv joints fell apart so had to be cleaned and reassembled with new driveshaft boot aswell.

Jack it up and rock the wheel right and left and listen for a dull metallic clunk + play before resistance this is a sign of a worn UJ ,which youll need to replace another test is to blip the throttle quickly whilst on the road youll feel a slight lag then noise as the UJ plays catch up.

ps when you rebuilt the DS did you check for squaring of the bearing ?.

just ran her up ,reved and not much movement but have noticed the engine leans towards the gearbox side slightly. jacked the front up and there wasnt any noise when moving the wheel right and left - there wasnt any free movement i felt resistance straight away. will get a pic of how its leaning.

Ive godda be honest ive not noticed that angle on mine ,but then again i have,nt looked perhaps others can clirify this a little better.

ps I meant rotate the wheel clockwise/anticlockwise is the the test you performed ?.

mine has a similar angle but then again mine aint a golf,

that engine looks mint ! i think the angle is probably normal , my guess now is the gearbox mount as it had a little oil seeping from the top when last off .
