what exactly does the maf do?

if you have the engine mapped with it off will everything be ok?

reason i ask is my vr6 had it unplugged when i got her and i plugged it in and makes no difference to power at all.

The maf does exactly what the accronim stands for and that is Mass Air Flow sensor. It uses this information in the ecu's calculations but i'm sure someone will be able to explain precicely what or how.

If the car is no different when it's plugged in, it would suggest its faulty. Mine ran like a dog when it wasnt working.. Really lumpy idle and no power... Sometimes turbo / supercharged cars are mapped without a MAF but see no advantage on an NA VR6

The MAF has a thin wire that heats up. The air rushing past it cools it. The computer measures how much current it takes to keep the wire at a constant temperature. Some MAFs have a temp sensor. Once the computer knows the outside temp and the "wind chill" it can determine the density of the air. It uses air density to calculate how much fuel to deliver.

The MAF is the main and only load input to your engines management system.

With out it the ECU is taking a CALCULATED GUESS as to the amount of load the engine is under.

There is ZERO benefit from running with out it, as the MAF is correct in every air flow/density situation, and obviously guessing is not.
