russj249 2
I know this has come up before, but I've tried a load of searches and can't seem to find the thread (unless it's been deleted)Anyway, I'm getting stuff in slowly for a turbo build, but instead of doing it all at once, I was thinking of doing a partial rebuild, inc. spacer plate for 8.5:1 ratio soon. Now here are a load of questions that are floating about in my head, that I would be grateful for some answers for. Links to websites will be even better!I've already got the spacer plate for it, but want to know if I'll have any issue's running on a lower compression with a standard N/A engine?I will try and get hold of some ARP head studs, but how many bolts are there, as all the kits I find are 12 studs but I thought there was 20? Or will genuine VW head kit be OK? I know they can't be re-used but that doesn't really bother me too much, I'll just buy another set! Also ARP rod bolts and rod bearings will probably get changed too while it's all apart.I've seen a few sets of piston rings about, but again, where's the best place to get them from and how much for a set?Is it cheaper to get a recon/skimmed head, or just replace a few things on my head? (bearing in mind I want it done over a weekend)Many thanks in advance,Joe
cabrioman 6
i would use arp head bolts as they are stronger and re-usable .... will have no probs running low comp on a N/A engine i done it for atlesat a year ull just find the power band is higher up the revs .....piston rings id go for VW ones or new pistons .... as for the head if you want it all done and running in one weekend then id go for a recon head .... hope this helps
russj249 2
That's perfect thanks Tony.as for the head then, am i restricted to an OBD1 head or can i get a later head with just swapping over the cam pulleys to the twin chain? and also head's off other cars such as the galaxy or sharan? might get one of those cheaper and rebuild one ready.Infact while writing this, it's got me wondering if i can get piston rings, 3 layer head gasket, stem seals etc from ford to save a few quid. i know some things are different on galaxy etc but surely the insides are the same? poll250 0
I've been running 8.5:1 compression for the last year and its been fine, so no wirries there. I think ARP head bolts are about the same cost as new VW ones, so makes sense to use them in the first place IMO.Good luck!
