VR6 BBK Conversion to Porker Calipers etc

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I know there are a few options which can be taken to upgrade the brakes on a Golf VR.

I have a set of what I believe to be "Big Reds" Porche part No 996.351.429.

I've done much scouring of the web to try and get a better understanding as to whether or not the Porche calipers I have will suit my conversion unforunately still none the wiser.

I now have it in my head that the Porche (Brembo) caliper upgrade is the one for me, at least thats what I think and keep telling myself!!

History - I have a mk3.5 Colour Concept Golf Cab which was a 2.0 8v Gti, thankfully it now bestows a VR6 lump. I'm just in the process of finishing of some bits n bobs before I send it in for a check/ service etc. Prior to this I will be changing the hubs/ discs etc to 5 stud (5x100) this week amongst other things and ideally would like to have my final brake set up completed (Porche BBK) prior to sending to the garage.

I've seen some suggestions that the calipers I have would ideally suit an R32 upgrade and a 334mm disc upgrade, if so does this include mk4 R32 which I would assume are also a 5x100 pcd and is there a difference between these and the VR hub setup ?

I note that many conversions would lead with the Boxster rears and a caliper adapter, which ultimately if that is the only way then so be it, just don't quite undertsand what the difference in the caliper range is?

I think the max disc size for me would be 325mm unless I can go bigger??

I also note that any option is dependent on wheel size, I would be looking at min of 17" and max of 18", I will be looking to put 17" TT Comps on the car as a starting point and believe that these wheels would enable for such BBK conversions without being fouled by the caliper in most instances.

Just looking to have good brakes but ones which look good behind the wheel too, espcially when painted yellow to suit the car (and no don't believe this is a Max Power type touch).

Any advice, suggestions, links for suggested parts/ alternative BBK setups/ modified brake hoses/ adapters to suit etc would be greatly received as I'm looking to have 80% completed by the weekend before 4th baby arrives next week and so as I can get my car on the road and hopefully attending a few shows this year to get further inspiration.

R32 and vr hubs have the same mounting for the calipers, but to run R32 brakes on vr hubs you'll need to space the caliper the same as if you were bolting on a 312mm brake conversion. And yes, the same pcd, and a min of 17" over R32 brakes, but some 17's won't fit.
