rsweeney 40 Posted February 6, 2011 Report Share Posted February 6, 2011 looking into the idea of getting a welder for myself as it has to be one on the most usefull skills, the kind of jobs i would want to do are wheel arches, sills and floor panels. im not experienced but am learning atm from people who have experience. whats best tig or mig and any advice ? bungy 2 Posted February 6, 2011 Report Share Posted February 6, 2011 A very open ended question but if I break it down a little then if you have any questions I can try and help from there.MIG welding is probably the easiest and cheapest entry into the kind of jobs you would like to do with a MIG set rated upto about 150-180 amps. This will give you flexibility to weld steel with the cheapest and easiest gas method being "pub gas" which is a compromise on quality but cheap and no contracts.If you fancy a TIG set then a simple DC set-up will get you going for reasonable money but to be able to do aluminium you'll need ACDC and then it gets expensive. You'll almost certainly need to rent/lease your gas bottle which pushes prices up aswell.I have posted some photo's and descriptions before and run welding tuition days free for those that fancy a go.
