Hiya Guys…

Need some help please!

Took my car to the garage yesterday to have the oxygen sensor changed as the engine light was on and they diagnose was the driver side sensor and the guy at the garage told me that the oxygen sensor is not important and does nothing for the car, and if I get it changed it’s best if I do both sensor as it’s a twin one! Is he right?

I’m about to have a Milltek exhaust put on and have car re mapped… and I have spoken to my brothers who drives skyline’s & Evo’s and they told me that I will need oxygen sensor change as this will help the ECU know how much oxygen is going into the car… could someone please verify?

Thanks

V.x

Haha

Both parties are right here

The oxygen sensor isnt NEEDED to make your car run. If the sensor is sufficiently damaged that the information that it is giving to the ECU is massively incorrect, then inplug it, and the ECU will do the rest. Having said that, the ECU should negate what it is seeing anyway ;)

However, on the later cars the oygen sensor is an important part to getting the car to run SPOT ON.

Also an oxygen sensor doesnt sence how much oxygen the engine is consuming. It measures oxygen content of the exhaust gas, which in turn the ECU uses to work out fuel injection calculations.

I presume that you have a 6 cylinder MK4 Golf? These cars have 4 oxygen sensors, and work in pairs.

Find out which of the sensors is knackered, and have it changed when your new exhaust is fitted. ;)
