Steve's Mystic blue VR.....now supercharged :-)

Recommended Posts

Ok thought it was about time I set up a thread on this section. I don't have pics of every stage of the changes, but this is a bit of a fast-track version, so here goes......

pics of when i first bought him, completely standard:

First thing I had to do was sort the suspension, so courtesy of a Premium members group buy, got myself a bargain on some FK Highsport adjustable coilovers. Next on the list of 'must do's' was to get one of these bad boy's fitted:

This completely transforms the sound of the engine and most definately gave me my biggest smile, in terms of mods (up until recently). Great bit of kit.

Next up was to change the front lights, so Nige and Gav kindly lent a hand on one of the Potter Engineering open days:

and the end product was this:

I have since changed the headlights again, but don't have any pics yet. So i'll get some updated ones up once he's had a good clean, later this week :)

In the meantime I was on the lookout for a nice set of rims. Didn't have too much money to play with, so when a set of mint condition, BBS RX II's, with mystic blue centers came up for sale on the forum here, I had to have them:

At this point I also fitted some FK black crystal rear lights:

Next up was another trip to Jim's for him and Tony to work their magic. This time fitting some bits I had collected over a period time. I had some Schimmel 263 cams from another great group buy on here. A full Miltek exhaust system, purchased 2nd-hand from Jim. And to compliement this set-up, managed to bag myself a couple of Ebay bargains in the form of a Miltek de-cat pipe and a 6-branch manifold.

Tony fitting the cams:

Oh and almost forgot, the SFS hose kit (another group buy bargain on here!):

And last, but certainly not least! Got myself a 2nd-hand, newly reconditioned Vortech V9 supercharger:

This was fitted a couple of weekends ago, by the usual suspects ;) I then travelled to Stealth Racing for the re-map the following day. Had a few issues, firstly with a couple of small air leaks on the joints of the pipes. This meant the first results came through at just over 240bhp, but only running at 4psi of boost. I need to add here that the leaks were not because of Jim and Tony's work when fitting the kit, it's because the pipes are not a very good fit. Turns out that they appear to have been chopped down and shortened slightly by the previous owner. Anyway, after Vince worked his magic to fix the leaks, he ran it on the rollers again and it was a bit better, but still only making 5psi. This produced figures of 258bhp and 220lbft torque. Vince tried and tried again to get the 6psi which the charger kit should be producing, but in the end we ran out of time (and probably patience too!). I'm fairly happy with those figures, considering it's not running the full boost it should do. I have a few more pics to add shortly, including the graph printout from the rollers.

A massive thanks go to Jim and Tony, for all their help with my car. I'm not going to go into great detail, but it certainly wasn't plain sailing getting to this point. We had problems with a few bits missing from the charger kit, which meant one trip to Jim's ended in a failed attempt at fitting it! That obviously meant re-scheduling for another time and also alot of phone calls / emails etc trying to source the missing parts. So to sum up, Jim and Tony have been absolutely brilliant in getting me to this point, so thanks again guys. Legends :)

Couple of updated pics, showing engine bay and my current lights (changed headlights from the angel eyes, to black mk4 style projectors. Also changed bulb on the indicators to clear ones, as the orange ones looked sh*t! Oh and black side repeaters.....can't really see them in the pic, but that's the idea!)
