1997 GOLF VR6 HIGHLINE Starting problem.

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody. Im new to this site and im very impressed with it. The problem i have with my car, is that it was running lumpy, so i changed the lead's and plug's. No change. Then it wouldn't stay idle on turnover. Now it will not run at all, after it backfired. Im now being told it could be a lot of different thing's at great cost. Does anybody have any idea's what the solution could be. Many thank's.

1st thing to do is get it on VAG-COM and find out what codes are coming up.

If you don't have it, message Jim Potter as i'm sure he's in Colchester in Essex too, He's on the VAG-COM list.. click on hyperlink and PM next to his name.

It's pretty simple stuff to be honest :) VAG-COM is just PC based software that you can plug into the car to read fault codes with. Same as if you took it to VW for instance with a warning light on... just cheaper :D

Have you managed to contact Jim? I'm sure he'll be able to help. I'd use my VAG-COM software, but I'm in the West Midlands so a bit far to travel :D

Also if anyone asks, it's a 97-98 so will be OBD2 with coilpack.

I'm sure that VAG-COM has changed name to VCDS... not sure what this is and if it's the same.

If it's anything like VAG-COM, you will have to get an OBD lead either off that site for the proper stuff or eBay for the downloaded software.

This can be pretty tricky to find out which version of the software will work with your car etc and with the lead if you get one off eBay.

Also the VAG-COM software struggled on windows vista, so recommended you have a laptop on XP for this.

If anyone cares to help me out with VCDS it'd be more than great as I haven't used it yet.

Hope this helps

VCDS is the new name for VAGCOM. A genuine cable will work with ANY version of VCDS and dependant on what genuine cable you get will dictate what cars you can use it on.

IF you use an ebay lead then all you will be able to use is 409.xx nothing newer.

I beleive Xyber posted a link to a good cheap alternative to the ebay stuff that uses 908.xx
