FishWick 21
Yo fella turbo nutters....Have any of you had problems with the turbo flange bolts / nuts coming loose?Mine was making a weird wheezing noise under boost the other day. Got it home to investigate and found the turbo was so loose it had a 2mm gap between it and manifold The bizarre thing is other than the noise, you would never know! It was still quick and smooth etc. With most of the exhaust pressure escaping BEFORE the turbine, I really don't get that, but never mind. At least it wasn't another wrecked compressor wheel, which was my first thought. One smashed turbo makes you paranoid there after!Anyway, I'm going to replace the bolts with these:- http://www.034motorsport.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_33&products_id=146And for good measure, these:- http://www.034motorsport.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_33&products_id=1329Do you reckon that will be enough? Was thinking of welding the studs to the manifold, but do you turbo boys have problems with bolts backing out?
rodney 17
I wouldn't weld them in as there is a law that follows...... you know you'll need to take them out the day after... LOLI have never heard of that specific.... I have come across other nuts/bolts backing off and basically nearly always due to vibration/movement over time. The basic solutions for all these type things are... The lock-nut type products but check their temperature levels as you are close to heat sources... not just nylock but the blue/red fluid stuff you put on the threads before you insert etc..The equivalent of castle nuts... do a gopogle there are companies who will stock some stuff or make to order so you can put a locking pin through...I like the idea of your second item/link but remember to anchor on both the nut and the engine/manifold otherwise it will just rotate with the twisting nut... (no egg sucking meant).... later thought. can you weld/create these so they link together and give you the overall effect and use the other bolts to keep tension..There are washers you can get as well which keep the tension on the nut and should remove any vibrations effects on the bolt/nut...finally check the threads are ok on the recieving side... use something like wax or old gum... you know good enough to take an impring but wont fall apart in the hole...good luck and I hope this helps... legvw 0
Yeah, as above, i'd use spring washers, they never come un-done, or you can can a pair of washers that when tight, ramp up on each other an lock out. I've seen the later type used on concrete crushers! And they don't come loose!!
bungy 2
What temperature do you think this area and bolts / nuts get to?
FishWick 21
Cheers chaps. I'm going to derform the threads on the studs so that they can't wind out of the manifold and then go with the copper /' steel nuts, 2 washers and the lock tabs. That should do it :-)
