AmitUk 0
Recentley my car started showing the ABS light constantly.I got it on the old vag com and below are the errors foundVAG-COM Version: Release 409.1-S-------------------------------------------------------------------------------Address 03: ABS Brakes Controller: 3A0 907 379 E Component: ABS/EDS ITTAE 20 GI V00 Coding: 03704 Shop #: WSC 000006 Faults Found:00290 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor: Rear Left (G46) 35-00 - -00283 - Front Left ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G47) 35-10 - - - Intermittent00290 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor: Rear Left (G46) 16-10 - Signal Outside Specifications - Intermittent00290 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor: Rear Left (G46) 04-10 - Mechanical Malfunction - Intermittent00287 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor: Rear Right (G44) 04-10 - Mechanical Malfunction - Intermittent00668 - Supply Voltage Terminal 30 16-10 - Signal Outside Specifications - IntermittentCan anyone iterpret these? is it likely for 3 sensors to fail at the same time? or is it more likely to be the ecu?Where is the ECU located and are they failure prone? And what is that supply voltage issue about?cheersAmit
Ben Seabrook 4
did you clear the faults and see what came back mate ?
AmitUk 0
no i didnt because my cheapy ebay cable doesnt allow me to reset codes even though I have a registered copy of vag com.
craggsy 91
You cant have a registered copy with ross tech as the latest release is 908.xx. Plus you have an ebay leadYou will need to clear all codes to see what is the latest as they could be from ages ago as ECU stores faults until cleared
Rikki 2
WHy wont it let you clear them did you do an auto scan?
AmitUk 0
I do have a registered copy. I went for the software only option. It let's me download and register any version I want with my key and 409 I the only version that work with the ebay lead.It did an auto scan then when I selected clear it said something like non aproved lead doesn't allow this function or something. The ecu was cleared about 3 weeks ago by a mechanic who fixed another problem so I know it was clear and in that time I have done about 100 miles.I think it's the abs ecu playing up as I can't see three sensors failing at the same time.Amit
Ben Seabrook 4
weird as even with the free version and an ebay lead you can clear the fault codes and run the check again - anyway it could be the pump ? is your car a 3 door or a 5 door and obd1 or 2 as that depends on where the ECU is located?
AmitUk 0
5 door odb2 (1997).yeah I thought it was odd I couldnt clear the codes to.. could of sworn I had done it before on my mk4.Amit
Rikki 2
you cant clear from auto scan go into the single one do brakes then you can clear....lets us know if any stay on. if not as soon as it faults again run it and post your results
AmitUk 0
will give it a shot but I am fairly sure they will just come straight back as they all appeared together.Would be handy if vagcom showed the logged date. How do I remove the ECU? can it be removed without removing the pump?Amit
Rikki 2
The rear faults usually point to ecu and you can do it withou takin the pump off....exactly what i did recently. The front may need a sensor or 2. Clear them then see what happens. Clear them a few times and see which ones stay!
AmitUk 0
where did you get your replacement ecu?Amit
Rikki 2
Good ol classifieds £30. You need the EXACT same part number as there are 3 types. Vagcom it first you might be ok for just a few sensors
AmitUk 0
Right I cleared the codes but the rear left sensor code wouldnt clear. It would pop back instantly.I then logged the wheel speed measuring blocks and it appears the rear left sensor is intermittent.Wheel Speed Wheel Speed Wheel Speed Wheel SpeedFL FR RL RR0 0 0 00 0 0 00 0 0 00 0 0 00 0 0 00 0 0 00 0 0 00 0 0 00 0 0 01 0 0 02 2 0 13 0 0 12 1 0 12 2 0 13 3 0 25 4 0 45 5 0 57 8 7 811 11 10 1114 14 14 1418 18 18 1722 22 22 2222 21 22 2120 20 20 2016 17 16 1710 11 10 104 4 4 43 3 3 37 6 6 614 12 13 1121 18 20 1826 26 26 2630 30 30 3027 26 27 2716 16 16 167 7 7 72 2 2 21 1 1 12 3 2 210 8 9 812 12 12 1219 20 19 2026 27 26 2732 32 32 3235 35 34 3444 44 44 4454 55 54 5465 65 0 6466 67 0 6663 63 0 6357 56 0 5754 53 0 5354 53 0 5348 48 0 4839 40 0 3929 29 0 2921 22 0 2215 16 0 1611 13 0 127 7 0 75 6 0 64 5 0 55 6 0 65 5 0 52 1 0 20 0 0 00 0 0 00 0 0 0above are the speed values from the wheels.. the third col (rear left) comes and goes.Does this mean a duff sensor or a dodgy connection?Where can I get a replacement sensor? Ben Seabrook 4
you can get the sensor's from GSF matey and as a premium member you get a discount there too
AmitUk 0
how do i get the discount? just turn up with the card?So i guess your thoughts are thr sensor is gone even though it works intermittently?Amit
Ben Seabrook 4
yeah take your membership card in mate to get a discount well am sure someone said you can swap the rear sensor's over (left to right etc) at the ECU and then check it again, if it's the same side then you know it's the ECU and if the problem then changes to the other side you know it's the sensor
AmitUk 0
any info on swapping the sensors over?Amit
Rikki 2
right. Under your rear bench is where the sensors plug into the loom....swap them left to right, clear codes, get it to fault, check again if it still says the same side, as before then its ecu...if the fault follows, ie swaps side ...left sensor is dead. If so there are 2 types (where it plugs into the loom) square or round. Prob square as looking at your vagcom you got the later abs 96/97?
AmitUk 0
You guys are awesome!Just been out to the car, working by iphone light, swapped the sensors over.As soon as I cleared the codes, rear right came up.So looks like I need a rear sensor with a square plug.are the front and rear sensors the same? Also how easy are they to fit?Amit
AmitUk 0
jesus! just looked on gsf.Rear sensors are £27 for one type and £50 for the other!Hope I dont need the later type!648VG0100 ABS SENSOR-REAR G3 >12/94 (>Ch.1H-SW385334) 49.70 Add --------------------------------------------------------------------------------648VG0110 ABS SENSOR-REAR G3 23.
Ben Seabrook 4
nope fairly sure front and rear are different mate but I wait to be told otherwise if you go to GSF just tell them which one you need - as for fitting the worst bit is getting the old sensor old, I ended up destroying mine with a chisel and a hammer !!
