But they do snap and the tensioners loose their ability to keep the chain taught allowing it to jump.Mine was shot at 155K and had worked through the noisy stage. 100K is the common distance to start listening out / worrying.You are looking at £500-£700 ( including a change of clutch) at a good independant garage or over £1100 from VW.
