We all know speeding is ilegal. We all know the speeds we should stick to... and we all speed.

Naturally a huge number of us get caught doing so, and face fines and points on our licence. It seems so unfair when you're caught. Everyone else out there is breaking the same rule, you were just the unlucky one.

However, if you think you were unlucky, spare a thought for the Swiss man who has been fined £180,000 for speeding.

The un-named man has been fined by a Swiss court. Being caught speeding in Switzerland is a risky business. Drivers don't get points on their licence, but fines are astronomical and any serious speeding will go through the courts. The court process will add a heap of different fees to the fine, and give the judge the freedom to increase the fines according to the means of the driver.

The driver is thought to be a serial offender, who has a fortune of £12.5 million - and was driving his Ferrari Testarossa at 63 miles an hour through a village when he was caught. The judge thought this fine would hurt suitably for such a wealthy driver.

The fine is thought to take the form of him having to hand over a villa and five luxury cars.

It is a record speeding fine in Switzerland.

Of course, such wealth means he doesn't have to take the decision lying down, so will be appealing, and may end up paying less.

I should mention at this point that this is based on reports and the Swiss courts have not confirmed the details. Never-the-less, speeding in Switzerland has long been an expensive business.

If you're caught speeding in Switzerland you are unlikely to face such a massive fine, although you will be traced back to the UK and fined. The good news is that it won't give you any points on your UK licence, but it could cost you a serious wedge.

The moral of the story. Don't speed. And if you do, keep your fingers crossed that you stay lucky.
