SamboVr6 0
I have just got my car back from the garage. It went in as it started making a noise when it got above 40mph particularly in 4th and got worse when i slowed down or braked. The garage replaced a n/s rear bearing which was apparently causing the problem.Got in it after having collected it only to find that the noise is still there. Does anyone know what it could be?? Its quite loud and makes the whole car vibrate inside and it is sometimes sounds like a flapping sound, like something is catching.Need help please!! Is it ok to drive??*-)
VR6Nat 9
where is this noise coming from? is it coming from the engine or the wheels (front or back)
SamboVr6 0
It sounds like its coming from the front and its definitely a wheel noise. Drives fine but is very noisy. Can feel it through the floor too.
VR6Nat 9
Have you had you wheel balance checked? Have a look to see if any weights have fallen off, or have you hit a kerb or pothole badly recently... also im guessing the wheels have been checked to make sure they're done up properly... might be worth jacking the front wheel off the floor, then try pulling the wheel about to see if there is movement in it... check both sides at the front. Could even just be something as simple as your inner arch is lose and is catching on the wheel, so check the plastic inner arch is attached properly...
SamboVr6 0
Cheers for the reply Nat. Definitely not hit anything recently, wheels are done up properly and i have no inner plastic arches, had them removed when i had the arches rolled. If there is play in the front wheels what would that be, i've been told that there is slight play in the steering rack would that make a difference?
SamboVr6 0
Just taken it out for a spin in my lunch break as you do and have to say it's not really a vibrating noise, it's more of a high pitched whining noise accompanied by a bit of grinding. Not as bad as it was before i had the bearing replaced but still there none the less. Is it possible that it is another bearing going?
VR6Nat 9
normally a wheel bearing thats getting worn is a whirring noise... it could be something to do with your steering rack, but i think the best bet is get under it, have a good look around, give the wheels a tug and see if anything is not as it should be... Ben Seabrook 4
could be the top mounts have gone on one side or the bushes in the wishbone have perished ??
SamboVr6 0
could be the top mounts have gone on one side or the bushes in the wishbone have perished ??I have recently had the track rod ends replaced and 1 strut top mount and new bushes all of which needed replacing after having the 18inch wheels on. Ben Seabrook 4
is it worse when turning the wheel ? as Nat says try jacking the car up and see if there is any play in the wheel
SamboVr6 0
is it worse when turning the wheel ? as Nat says try jacking the car up and see if there is any play in the wheel Steering makes no difference. It's only when it hits about 40mph, after that seems to fade away, only to return when slowing to about 40mph. Strange. Will have a look though like you say.Do we think it's ok to drive? I know that's not very helpfull sorry Tend to drive above 40mph most times anyway so should be fine. Well Officer, the reason i am doing 60mph in a 40 zone is because.......hmm worth a go!! :-dWill have to get it looked at then. Cheers for help anyhoo. :-*Actually whilst i've got you... noticed today at traffic lights that there was white smoke coming from my front grill, not loads but a few puffs. I just had my car motd (flew through i am proud to say) and the only advisory was that it has a slow coolant leak. I'm thinking if it is leaking antifreeze on to the engine, when it gets hot it is going to burn off, hence the smoke.Does that sound likely??
Ben Seabrook 4
ha ha yeah worth a shot :)hmmm white smoke - again what sort of smoke ?? solid or more wispy like steam ?? I had a coolant leak from my radiator recently and never noticed any smoke coming from the engine tbh !

VR6Nat 9
Yeah could well be hun... just to make sure open the bonnet up when its running and have a little look around and a good sniff for anything untoward, get someone to rev the engine too while you're there just in case, but dont think thats anything major... Ben Seabrook 4
ah ok well as Nat says then would get someone to rev the car a bit and have a look to see if it's the leaking coolant it's prob doing it all the time but because your keeping the speed above 40mph you would only notice when stopped
SamboVr6 0
Good stuff, Thanks people for all your help. :-* :-d

SamboVr6 0
Bit of an update. Driving my car home last night and have now noticed that when i steer to the left there is a bit of a grinding/catching noise. Also upon hitting 40mph there is now a woah woah woah noise.Dunno if that makes any sense, hard to describe noises in writing. Any more ideas?? Getting it looked at tomorrow but just thought some of you lovely people might be able to help in the mean time. Also on the white smoke front, checked my bill for the mot to find that the garage filled up my coolant tank with antifreeze & stop leak for the leak obviously. Checked it this morning as the coolant light came on in car to find that the tank is completelty empty.Could just be me, but that does not seem like a 'slow leak'. If it's losing this much coolant all over the engine, could this explain the smoke. Looked last night and seems to be smoking/steaming from the passenger side somewhere near the front but possibly not as it was fairly windy last night. Def passenger side though.Hmm... suggestions s'il vous plait?
VR6Nat 9
It sounds like it could be your wheel bearing on its way out,, thats the sorta noise it makes.... this can be checked like said before by jacking the car up and giving the wheel a pull about, if there is movement in it then that would point to it being that....As for the coolant leak, that is def not a small one!! lol. that could well explain the smoke as it is on the passenger side and if the smoke doesnt smell like oil then thats a good explaination for it. Is the leak coming from the bottle or one of the hoses?

One of my mates is gonna pressure test it tomorrow hopefully will get it sorted then. Can't believe how bad it's got, its peeing it out! Not good in this weather. :-(I'm gonna flip if it is a bearing as the garage said they had fixed the problem with a rear bearing. If they had actually tested it properly they would have known the noise was coming from the front. :@Cheers once again Nat :-*
Ben Seabrook 4
yeah sounds like a bearing and as for the coolant leak if it's passenger side I would put money on it leaking from the thermostat housing - a very common place for them to go on VR's !!

Whats a thermostat housing like price wise and do you know the best place to get one from?? I really know nothing when it comes to these things, thought i did but then my last car was a punto so that says it all :-d
