Golf GTi 16v to VR6 conversion

Recommended Posts

Well i finally made the 16v go pop so i decided it was about time to bite the bullet and for VR6 power. The car started off as a pretty standard metallic black 3 door. The car itself was in fairly good nick, albeit with a badly painted passengerside front wing and Audi A3 alloys. I picked it up for a bargain as it also needed the immobilser working out, a new battery and a power steering pump. I sorted the immobilser whilst i was there and took the battery and PAS pump from my old 16v. Oncei got home i realised that in the boot were a pair of almost brand new Hella Quads. I set about changing the lights and fitting HIDs, Fitting my exhaust system from my old car and having the whole front end re-sprayed. These pics are from just after the paint job and the big clean-up......

Obviously the next port of call was the suspension for which i got hold of a set of v-max coilovers which tbh arn't the best in the world but they do the job for the time being.

  • 3 months later...

A few weeks later i found myself on some guys drive removing the engine and subframe complete from a donor highline. The engine and subframe came out in about an hour. The longest bit was removing the loom and trying to memorise where it all goes. Anyone that has removed a loom before will know how much of a PITA it is to get it around the brake servo without fully removing it. That took the rest of the day lol.

Any way, engine in the back of the van on the way home for a minor strip and replace

The guy i bought the engine from had reciepts for work done to the engine including the chains. Apparently by the Phirm. So i only did a few bits to the engine before fitting it, New cam cover gasket, inlet and TB gaskets, new water pump, removed the aircon pump and fitted new aux belt. Tensioner bearing looked fairly new (apparently replaced) so i left it.

Under the cam cover looked remarkably clean

Whilst i was at it i gave the plastic top cover a quick lick of paint that i had knocking about and bead blasted the inlet to clean it up a bit

It was all in and i gave it a quick run up (after putting the fuel pipes onthe right way) with no throttle cable (forgot to pick it up with conversion bits) and no rad :o, only briefly mind. I then went and scavenged/bought the missing parts needed including MAF, half the coolant hoses, new rad, throttle cable and other various small bits.

I didnt get any pics of it all completed as i lost my camera, :-( But its all together and running good now ^o)

In the mean time i set about re-furbing the 16"s that were on the car when i bought it as the 17" RS4 reps are heavier than tractor wheels. The wheels are off of an Audi A3 sport. Iv always fancied having white wheels so i thought f*ck it and went ball deep. They were pretty kerbed round the rim to start with but it was soon sorted with a bit of DA action
