dirty 0
As some of you may know im building a VR turbo(along with most of the country it seems), currently collecting parts but theres bits and bobs which i need to get my head around, ive read the build threads and engine tuning section where ive picked up most of my info but theres a few questions i have and hopefully ill add that can help me and others out, so if you wanna add a question then go ahead.First up is if im fitting a spacer gasket will i need 1 or 2 genuine vw headgaskets to fit either side of the spacer or will this drop compression to much?Do you have to have an oil pressure retsrictor on the feed line and if so where and which restrictor to go for?Is it wise to run the external wastegate using a screamer pipe or run it into the downpipe?Once its all built up and done and ready to start, if i do not have management what boost will the car run at or is this dependant on how i set the turbo up in terms of wastegate? In terms of fueling what are my options? ive got 440cc injectors and standard fuel pump?Im doing my best to keep budget down but at the same time not cut corners, Any help appreciated in advance.cheers
FishWick 21
You need just one 3 layer metal head gasket mate. You pick apart the brass eyelets at each end, bin the middle layer and keep the top and bottom layers. And I would use Permatex copper gasket adhesive too. Coat all sides for good measure. As far as Garretts are concerned, you only use an oil feed restrictor (on the turbo, not at the oil filter Tee off end) on the GTxxxxR turbos. Remember "R" means ball bearing. I emphasise that important point because you can get a GT30 or GT35 etc that are journal bearing'd, which don't need a restictor afaik.Remember this - R = Restrictor ;-) But always check with the manufacturer of your turbo as Borg Warners, IHIs, Precision Turbos etc etc may specify something different. You can run a screamer pipe if you want, but make sure to vent it well away from the bonnet area. Most folk do a side exit or a fit a moped silencer to it.Personally I would vent it back into the downpipe. Some people pushing for the last horsepower to shave a tenth off their 1/4 time will claim it's restrictive venting back into the downpipe. Can't really see that myself if the downpipe is designed well and the WG is the right size. The initial boost will be governed by the spring in the wastegate. Tial WGs come with 8psi springs by default and that's a good safe boost to start with to make sure everything's working as it should. If you want more boost, simply add a manual boost controller, or an electronic one, choice is yours.Ideal fuelling should be a Walbro 255lh intank feeding an external Bosch 044. The uprated intank on it's own will suffice to around 450 crank power, but I seriously would over engineer the fuelling mate. Too many VRTs die a horrible death from people skimping on the fuelling.440s are OK up to 450-500 crank power. The Bosch is the dogs though. Good for 600hp and you'll never run out of fuel. 12 bar lock out!!!I hear you on the budgetting, these are hard times. My only advice is to remember you are potentially going to double the engine's output (maybe more!) and if you want it to last at that kind of power, the right kind of investment needs to be put into it ;-)
