rahkee 0
i had the bonet open yesterday and it started to rain, after i closed it i started the car and nothing, i get a funny hissing noise from behind the speedo and the clock resets its self sometimes i get a clicking noise from behind the speedo or maybe a hissing and then clicking, its all very random but the engine wont start or turn over at all. the battery is perfectly fine it might be the starter motor but that doesnt explain the clock resetting itself, maybe its a faulty ignition switch does anybody know how to test it? ive tried to bump start the car with 4 of my mates so plenty power but still no start. maybe water just got into the electrical components. has this happened to anybody before?I put up a video aswell. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvPVG_v-8CgNOTE: THE NOISES ARE NOT COMING FROM THE ENGINE, THEY SOUND AS IF THEY ARE COMING FROM BEHIND THE SPEEDO, YOU CAN ALSO HEAR A WHINING NOISE AFTER I ATTEMPT TO START THE CAR PROBABLY THE FUEL PUMP. ANY HELP IS APRECIATED THANKS IN ADVANCE.
krave 0
How do you know the battery is fine? people always think there battery is fine because they have lights etc etc. But its usually not. This is exactly what happens when your battery is dead, especially if it has got wet.I had a coolent hose burst and this happened. rahkee 0
ok well my battery is fine plenty of life all the electrics work very well i also drove the car that day it started fine no problems etc... also its got an indicator on it that tells you if its dead and needs replacing or if it needs charging or if its charged and its fully charged but main thing is that its still got plenty of power in the electrics no signs of weakness, any other ideas much appreciated
Guest Nero1701
Take nothing for granted with a battery, lights, rdio etc dont need the juice of a starter motor!!!
rahkee 0
ok well thanks again, but even if it was the battery it would have jump started with 4 strong guys pushing it down the road, also with jump leads still the same thing conected to a bmw 320i so fairly good power source still the engine wont turn over, which brings the attention to the starter motor but it should have jump started with a roling start right? even so it still doesnt explain the erratic behaviour. im sorry i dont want to seem ignorant your replies are much appreciated but i feel the battery has been strongly ruled out?? my guess is something has gotten wet but would it not have dried by now? anyway thanks again in advance
rahkee 0
ok just a quick update ive had the car towed and tried to start it still wouldnt start, so clearly ruling out the battery for some reason i decided to take the starter motor out and connected it directly to the battery and it seems to be working fine just the engine wont turn over so WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS STUPID CAR :@

rahkee 0
how u doin mate, i can understand how frustrating the problem is and very hard to point out, it turned out it was a grounding problem the ground wire that lead to the starter motor was eroded, i just sanded it down and re-conected it... to see if thats the problem get a jump lead from the negative side of the battery and connect it to the ground wire (black, negative) on the starter motor or on some metal in the engine bay, should start up straight away good luck! rahkee 0
im not an electrician but i understand the problem to have been that the circuit was broken and not complete there for some sort of short circuit causing the speedo console to reset and the hissing noise is the noise it makes when its calibrating... i think from what i remember there 2 screws out of the end of the starter motor it should say which is - and + and just screw the wires on, but with - and + if you got them mixed up you will definitely know! lol
