As i don't have a clue about welding i tought i'd ask on here first before taking it to a garage.

I was under the car last night checking wishbone bushes etc before my 4 wheel alignment on friday. While i was there i noticed a hole about 3 inch square in the floorpan right next to where the sill jacking point is. It looks as if a previous owner has had the standard vw jack slip and go through the floor. Anyway, i got the grinder/buffer out and cleaned it up to have a better look at it, thats when i realised it was a bit worse than i originally thought. Basically the lip between the floor pan and the sill has totally rotten about 2 inch either side of the hole.

Would it be possible for a garage or competant welder to cut out the rotten metal and weld a plate from the bottom of the sill to the floor pan or will i need a totally new sill?

If this ain't making any sense i can go take a pic.

Cheers

i'm a mechanic and see quiet a few things like this. Although welding skills aren't the best, it should be possible to cut it out and make a new piece to fit. It won't need a new sill, The best bet is to get a screwdriver and hit up right around it to make sure there's no other bits.

If I were you I'd get somebody that welds specialist cars if you want a good job doing. If you're not that bothered, you don't have to be great with a welder, as long as you're ok with a grinder. Then some brushable joint seal, and stone chip over that and job done.

If you can get a picture up I'll have a look as I had to weld a H reg Fiesta earlier!! Fun! :(
