Slotted socket for suspension change?

I am going to attempt to replace my rear suspension but have read in a manual that you need to use a special type of slotted socket to take out a nut when replacing the shocks. I have looked on here and on the interweb but haven't found any mention of it.

Anybody know if this is true or can it be circumvented?

If not where could I get the socket from?

U dont need the special socket for the rears, only the front shocks.
