jamieherd 0
I fitted an FK Konigsport coilover kit and powerflex bushes yesterday. I used the guide below to assemble the top mounts etc. The only difference is that part no 5 was already on the coilovers with a securing nut holding it in place. i then put on parts 6,7,8,9 and 10 as it shows. When the car was on the axle stands all looked fine, then when i got it back on the deck this happened.I can't think where i went wrong. The top mount is the correct way round, bolts 8 and 10 are properly tightened up. I'm totally stuck. Can anyone point me in the right direction??Cheers
craggsy 91
That is how it should be..........well mine is and its been like it for about 4 yrs
amazak 3
Did you use the old mounts? Mine failed MOT because of this back in Jan, so I replaced all with genuine vw mounts incl bearings and they now sit right.
jamieherd 0
All the parts i used were new and from the stealers. Will the top plate sitting like this not effect the handling in any way?
craggsy 91
You'll be fine mate..........but when some of the mechanics get on they will tell you for deffo
gavinvr6 0
mk vr is on coilies and it dont look like that. but i ran a mk4 escort with the tops like that for about 4 years. and it never failed an mot.
jamieherd 0
Just a bit worried as they weren't like this before. Well at least i know it'll be safe enough to drive till i get round to checking it over again!!!

Oh and he also made me remove the sunstrip as he said it was too low. Talk about picky!
gavinvr6 0
best bet is get it checked over by a mechanic, it needs to be cheked for movement. but easy way is take it round the block and do a couple of sharp braking/accelerations and steering movements to make sure nothing is moving or knocking before driving it properly
jamieherd 0
Just done a 50 mile trip in it. No knocking or clunking. Been having a look at a few other illustrations on this site this morning. Some show bolt 8 put on before the top mount 7. Will this make a difference as to how the top plate secures? craggsy 91
Well if Ben takes a pic of his suspension tops as Tony did his for him so should be right
Ben Seabrook 4
the diagram is right so if you followed it correctly and tightened both nuts well then you should be fine - the first nut which secures the top mount to the top spring on the coily needs to be tightened as far as possible. Ben Seabrook 4
Well if Ben takes a pic of his suspension tops as Tony did his for him so should be rightjust seen this - will do this and grab you a pic of mine later and bung it up here mate so you can see

Do u think this is where i could've went wrong? I left the bolt there because it was on the coily's when i bought them.
Ben Seabrook 4
nope you should have had a bolt on top of the spring plate which should have been wound down as far as it will go then the bearing and top mount go on top mate
jamieherd 0
Yeah, sorry. Thats how i've assembled it. Beginning to confuse myself now.In order i have the spring, spring plate, securing nut, bearing, top mount, securing nut, top plate and securing nut. I also have tightened the nut on top of the spring plate with an impact wrench so it's defo down as far as it can go.
Ben Seabrook 4
sounds like you have it right mate - just had a look at mine and it does sit slightly proud as well so prob ok - will try and get a pick up later for you but sounds right - how does it feel when you drive ? jamieherd 0
It feels really good, theres no clunking or bumping and the steering feels really smooth. I also have it booked in for a 4 wheel alignment/camber check on friday, should they still be able to carry this out even though the top plates are sitting like this? Ben Seabrook 4
yeah they should just has mine done the other week mate - made a huge difference well sounds like it's fine to me mate

kie_dub 0
yup mine are like this, they are suppose to be like that i got told, apparently the gap alters in size when you turn the steering wheel. I have h and r coilovers and dont have a problem
jamieherd 0
cheers for that mate. That pics made me feel a bit better about it. lol. I wonder why this happens then?
Ben Seabrook 4
not sure mate to be honest but I guess it has something to do with the fact it's a coilover suspension as when I had just uprated spings and shocks it didn't look like this !
gavinvr6 0
it will probably allow the bottom of the top plate to press down against the rubber top mount by the thickness of the nut. which looks like yours is out by, but means the top mount isnt bolted directly to the strut. i dont know what affect this will have on the car. id always folllow the instruction given with peice of kit then if anything goes wrong u can blame the manufacturer lol
