goonersteve 0
As i don't wanna highjack someone elses thread.....my car used to start 1st time every time, but is now not starting at all :-( It turns over, but just doesn't seem to want to catch at all. I initially thought it may be the coilpack, but just had my mate (ex-mechanic) check it over and he says i've definately got a spark and def not a fueling issue. He also checked all wiring etc and said that all looks to be in good nick. He thinks it may be the crankshaft position sensor. Is anyone able to comment on this and whether or not this sounds right? I'm gonna try get it on VAGCOM anyway, but any opinions / advice would be appreciated.
Ben Seabrook 4
bump - come on peeps someone must have some advice ??
thegoth 5
VAG-COM is the place to start. One of the two engine/crank/cam sensors failing kills the spark as the ECU doesn't see the engine turning. Not sure if it's the crank sensor, near the bottom by the oil cooler or the cam sensor near the coil pack.Note: on a pre-95 engine (obd1?) the 00513 code is constant if the engine is not running! jims13 6
ive got it steve, your welcome to borrow it , if you need to
goonersteve 0
Cheers for your responses guys. I was quoted £58 plus VAT for the basic diagnostics today, so i'm gonna have a little think and see where to go from here. Thanks for your offer Jim. Only thing is, as i can't get it started, i can't get up to you. Ben says he might be ordering it though, so may wait and see if i can arrange something with him, if / when he does get it. goonersteve 0
Awsome mate
rigs 0
If you have fuel and spark it's not the crank sensor, When the ecu sees the crank sensor reading that the engine is turning it turns on the fuel pump and coilpack.
goonersteve 0
Well, at last I have him running again! Ben kindly came over armed with his VAGCOM lead. We ran the diagnostic and only found one fault, which was the Engine Speed sensor, if i remember right :^) Now for the weird bit......i said to Ben "here look, this is what happens when i try and start it"......turned the key and it starts first time! I turned it off and tried again and same thing happened. We left it a while, had a cuppa then tried once more and again it started first time and idled perfectly. Can anyone make any sense of this? The only thing we can think of is that the ECU thought there was a prob with the sensor when there wasn't. Then after we cleared the fault code it decided there is actually nothing wrong *-) Anyway, gonna run it down to the garage for a good service and check up etc. just to make sure all is well. But touch wood, all seems to be sorted now. Big thanks goes to Nige, Jim and Rigs for all your helpful advice and in particular Ben for getting hold of VAGCOM and making the effort to drive over. Cheers boys. After the best part of 5 months i finally have my heart and joy back
thegoth 5
on OBD1 the engine speed sensor always comes up if the engine isn't running and resets itself once it is.I wonder if it was weather / temperature related and it has now warmed up or dried out.
Ben Seabrook 4
I wonder if it was weather / temperature related and it has now warmed up or dried out.yeah that's the only other thing we could think off - Steve hs tried it quite lot of times but as you say with the last couple of days of nice weather could have helped !! anyway it's running now so he cn get it to the locl garage and get it checked over
goonersteve 0
I wonder if it was weather / temperature related and it has now warmed up or dried out.So does that mean it's gonna be off the road for 5 months every winter?! :S
craggsy 91
It could of just been the sheer presence of Ben that made it start..............obviously heard him screaming up so thought " I better start!!!"
jims13 6
or it could be a key related problem, ive had to replace a dodgy ignition barrel before..
Ben Seabrook 4
It could of just been the sheer presence of Ben that made it start..............obviously heard him screaming up so thought " I better start!!!"pmsl - will take that as a compliment mate hopefully the garage can give it the once over and find something to ease your mind Steve, otherwise as you say you will be worrying about this at the start of every rainy, cold, damp spell of weather i.e all the time ;)
Bigjobbo 0
If the fault comes back, at least you know it's the sensor. I've cleared faults before, but as soon as the conditions are met, the ecu throws it up again, can take 1 drive or one year! Hope it isn't in your case, 5 months is too damn long.
