Ive had my first VR6 for about 2-3 weeks now and I love it, the only problem is the fuel consumption. It says im getting 15.6 mpg and when I get out of the car, there's a really strong smell of petrol. Now I know this isnt normal, what needs to be done to sort this?

I dont really use it for long distance runs at the moment so I know the mpg isnt gonna be great but I was expecting more than 15.6!! I'm not racing the thing everywhere I go either. Because I dont know a great deal about cars, I spoke to my dad and he says it needs a re-tune and that a garage won't charge much to do it.

Any ideas? x

First check would be the blue temp sensor on the thermostat housing (front right hand side of engine, under coil pack). When I got my VR, it was doing 17mpg and smelled like a petrol station forecourt. If the blue temp sensor (G62) is giving a bad reading, the engine will ignore it and just default to cold start mode. This allows the car to start, but it is like driving with the choke on the whole time.

Even if the temp gauge on the dash is reading 90 degrees, the blue sensor can still be broken. For some reason, VW decided to use a seperate temp sensor for the dash gauge and the ECU. For your info, the dash gauge is connected to the yellow temp sensor which sits directly beside the blue sensor.

If oyu have access to VAG-COM you can compare the dash reading to the ECU reading and this will tell you if the sensor is bust. If not, the part is only about £16 and can be fitted very easily.

Hope that helps.
