Glyn Mk3 0
Just got some new plates, I wanted to use the sticky pads to stick them on instead of screws. Front plate was easy, just unscrew old plate, clean surface and put on new one! But the rear is being a pain! First of all the screws have rusted through, and despite use of WD40 and pliars, eventually the ends have disintegrated - leaving the screws in place! After much deliberation, I decided to snap the old plate off. No probs there and quite fun. However screws still in place! Now how do i remove them? I found that the screws are screwed into raised washer type nuts about 3mm thick which appear to go through to the inside of the boot door. I took off the boot door card and found the bolt ends which are connected to the outside washer nut type things! So should I (with help of assistant!) undo the bolt on inside and remove washer nut type thing from outside?? I need a flat surface to mount the number plate with sticky pads...but am now thinking screws may be better! See the pics and you'll hopefully see what I'm on about! Even if i did get the screws and fittings off the car, I'd then have to fill the two holes!! What do I do!? (inside boot door)
VR6Steve 0
Same thing happened to me. The screws were so rusted on mine they just snapped. Fortunately we did it at a mates garage. He got out a dremel tyre tool and ground them down, just put a bit of touch up paint over the exposed metal and stuck the plates on. Job done!
Glyn Mk3 0
Okay, did you basically drill the screws out? and use to screws to fix the plate on? Cause I was hoping to use the sticky pads, but it doesn't look like I'll be able to because the screw hole recepticals stick out too much. &|
VR6Steve 0
No, just ground them down until they were flush, then used the sticky pads.
Glyn Mk3 0
ah ok, cheers for your replies. gonna have to think about doing that. i don't like having screws on them, the smooth finish looks nicer! and yes i am picky lol.
mina 0
Halfords do 6mm thick sticky pads - that should be plenty to clear any of the screw that you might have left over.
VR6Andy 0
Yeap i'm another, i had to break my plate at a cost of £18 to replace.I used to have the plates stuck on but they did occasionally fall off!!!oopps and i was worried about them being stolen. My screws snapped, i drilled out the rusted bolts and replacedwith new copper greased self tappers through the boot. Its solid now. 8o)
