ok...you can, start on what a cylinder you intend to do first, top dead centre that piston, remove spark plug add compressed air to keep valves shut.

Remove cams etc, pull out buckets.....now try to crack off the collets without braking the air seal in the cylinder.....go on try it.....then use a special tool that bolts to one of the cam cap studs and compress spring, then use another special tool to remove the steam seal,no pliers here as the valve stem in in the way.

Nice and easy.

Thats why it died out a long time ago....it takes more time to do than removing the head!!!

oh and there is nothing worse than a reply telling you can without giving an explanation.

well i had pretty much covered valve stem seal replacement 4 minutes earlier. http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?266259.0#post_266263

and id hardly say that "head off, valves out" was very in depth !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! same as my comment of "leave head and valves in" I was even kind enough to mention it can't be done with tools from hailfords

Anyway going into further detail is normally a total waste of time as most don't even say appreciater the help

Doing it with the head on save on £££ for new head bolts and head gasket and personally if you take the head off then i would get it skimmed and pressure tested which means the head has to go away for at least a good few hours, then you going to spend more time lapping in valves. so its not quicker and cost £80+ more http://www.boompa.com/guide/valve-stem-seal-replacement/112

Save loads? not so,as what else would you have to do? headgasket,ex gasket etc,bolts...? sure but if your in that deep may aswell do the lot.

and have you replaced the stem seals on a VR6 motor without removing the head yourself?

your totally right and on my motor unless i know the head gasket was in good nick with good compression id have the head off and do the above, then at 145k id start scratching my head about guide... then thinking about a 3 angle valve job and the price would grow.

No not on a VR6, have you? But i have on a 205 gti and its not nearly as much as a job as you make out, Just use a different spring compressor and instead of pliers for seals use the said tool, apart from that its the same process.

Not everyone want the best from there car or the job, some people just want to sort the smoke and get it back on the road or sell it. if there not bother about head gasket and skimming and want it back on the same day rather than two days id do it with the head on

after all the question was "do i have to take the head off". and the answer is no you don't
