running rich! maybe the MAF?

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon people.

Congrats on an awesome site with so much cool stuff, you seriously could waste alot of time on here.

Anyway down to business and my first post.

I own a 96 Golf VR6. Everything on it is superb apart from the mpg! (well i say everything, Dam tensioner pulley on serpatine belt gave up the ghost yesterday). I know VR6's aint exactly the most economical car out there but when it's returning on average 8.2mpg i start to worry!!

The engine runs perfectly when cold, but when it has heated up it feels like it's running rich (especially at about 3K revs) and judders, feels like going over rumble strips.

I'm pretty sure it's the MAF as got semi-dirtied up plugs and feels like that is pumping to much fuel in when hot (i.e. not realising the temp and keeping the choke out so to speak).

I aint got access to VAGCOM, yet! So cant really get off any codes. Had the battery off to re-set ECU but with no happening either.

Any help from you knowledgable lot would be great.

Cheers Darren

Cant really run it any where at the mo until after i have replaced the tensioner pulley and belt.

But disconnecting the MAF along with checking over coilpack, checking leads and plugs, disconnecting battery to clear codes and just generally a good clean out is this afternoon's job,

Where's the best place to get new MAF/coilpack if needed? I tend to use GSF, but thought i would ask anyway.
