right ive fixed the water leak and tha car was running fine yesterday, today i went out and it was hunting for revs and trying to die. it ticks over at about 650rpm once warm then it kept diving to 200rpm and going back to 650rpm. its doing this randomly but roughly 20-30 seconds between each one.

also i know its the wrong forum but i think my gearbox is making rough noises i t sounds like its coming from that side of the engine towards the back of the bay (im partially deaf so its real hard to say exactly where its coming from). i've already done one gearbox (diff exploded) and dont wanna do another. how can i check gearbox oil and top it up/change it if need be. is there a sight window/refil hole?

somebody please help coz im at my wits end with this car. and close to tears. i love it to bits but its just breaking my heart (literally) and my wallet every time i drive it

and yes in the immortal words of freddie mercury 'im in love with my car'

Not sure about the poor idle mate. Check that all of the sensors near the thermostat housing are connected properly and the plugs are dry.

There isn't a geabox level indicator. Only a refill plug at the front of the box as you look at it from underneath. There's a large hex plug which is where you fill/check the level. You can get the hex key from halfords and to check the level just undo the plug slowly. Once its removed, a small amount of oil should leak out of the hole meaning that its got enough in it. The gearbox holds 2 litres from empty but if it's recently been fitted and isn't leaking it should be ok. Worth a check though.

Shame your not still in CR0 mate. It would make all of this a lot easier. lol.

to bloody right bout being in croydon mate. was whole lot easier as i had a little shed for storage and a place i can put the car on stands for work but none of that down here. the box i fitted was second hand after blowing up the first one (it spat it internals all over the motorway), i thought the guy checked the oil level when he fitted it but since he never even plugged in the reverse lamp it wouldnt supprise me if he didnt lol, i was going to do an oil swap as well as i've heard mt90 fluid makes for a slightly smoother feel to the box

If you can VAG for the sensors... Lambda/Idle etc etc are all possible causes so best to plug in and see what you have...

The gearbox.. Yes it is a lie on your back and swear at it whilst it runs down your arms... Shame its not olive oil and good for your skin really....

If you are concerned about the box you can get the old slick 50 and options for the box and it is worth it especially if the box is not a fully known zone...

The oil in the box needs changing every so often anyway so why not do it all then at least you have removes a few items from your lists with out a big £££ outlay...

im gunna go with the check/top up on the gear box and chuck some slick 50 in it for now to see how it goes but im gunna save up for a box rebuild with g60 final drive. as for the vagcom the garages round here a a frigging joke with the prices they charge. gunna see if i can find someone with a fault finder for now and see what it throw's up. a mate's got an obd2 one and i can get a 2x2 adaptor from flea bay for a few quid. but he's in london and im in sunny portsmouth so getting the times a bit tricky lol. guess im stuck with a garage come to think of it. bang goes that new exhaust lol. does anyone know where i can get a obd1 reader from????

i'll probably need help with the gearbox if i change the fluid. even though i like to have a go i aint to mechanically minded. so if there is anyone on the south coast willing to help a fellow vr6oc member out i'll happily re-pay with all the tea you can drink and all the bacon butties you can eat. and even take you to the seaside for an ice cream and a romantic walk along the promanade :)

isv and sound deadener checked and cleaned as were all hoses, throttle body stripped and cleaned, post maf hoses stripped/cleaned and checked for splits/leaks. pre maf got new alloy tubing and silicon connectors even a new filter (but that was for fun to move filter behind bumper) and everything got new clips. yet it still tries to die. majority of the time its when cold and occasionally when warm. this is doing my head in now. plus mot time is due at end of the month so im starting to panic now. im starting to think a w*nkered maf but surely that would cause even worse problems. lack of time means i only get an hour here and an hour there to look at it and i cant afford to get it on vagcom at the moment.
