ip 0 Posted September 4, 2008 Report Share Posted September 4, 2008 So, I've just sold my coilovers to another forum member (hope you enjoy them) and fitted the oem struts back onto the car. Why? Well, the coilovers were great fun but my girlfriend wasn't a fan and they weren't ideal when I needed to take the car along farm tracks to mountain biking locations.However, the front springs on my oem struts are a little rusty and in need of replacement. I've heard mixed reviews but I was wondering if Eibach springs with the oem shocks might work out as a compromise between the original set up and the coilovers?Does anyone have any pictures showing the drop you get with Eibachs and what is the handling like? I know it wilnot be as good as the coilovers I had but is it any better than the standard set up? Maybe there is another spring I could consider?I also noticed that Eibach don't sell a specific VR6 spring. Accorind to the sites I have found, they recommend the same springs for the VR6 as they do for the 1.4CL. Can that be right? Surely the VR6 engine is too heavy?Any advice gratefully recieved.ip Link to post Share on other sites

Does anyone have any pics with the pro kit installed?Also, bit of back ground reading suggests that the H&R springs will be higher and smoother than the Eibachs. Can anyone comment? Timah89 1 Posted September 9, 2008 Report Share Posted September 9, 2008 H&R springs are great - we have them on VR6 with Bistiens lowered c25mm and on mk2 16v with uprated gas struts - sorry to say you are wasting your time and £s if yo refit with std dampers and bushes etc other than just lowering the car; it will drive awful!!! ip 0 Posted September 10, 2008 Author Report Share Posted September 10, 2008 The FKs seem to run quite low with an actual minimum drop of around 40mm (and they are a firm shock). I'm looking for a really minimal drop (just to fill the front wheel arches a little) and only marginally harder ride than stock shocks. I had them set up proffesionally and they assured me they'd got the best compromise out of them and wouldn't push them any higher. As mine and my girlfriend's only car (she uses it for her work), it just had to be just a little more practical.Certainly do miss the handling though....... Link to post Share on other sites

For good prices and advice proven_products seems to be a good place. The whole kit was still expansive mind. I'll post my conclusions once they are on. I just hope it doesn't end up too low again.I'm with you on the wheels thing BTW. The original 15" bbs wheels look sweet anyway (though I could be tempted by a set of MK4 25th anniversary wheels which were 16").Cheers,ip Link to post Share on other sites

ip 0 Posted September 27, 2008 Author Report Share Posted September 27, 2008 Well, fitted the boge/H&R combos today and intial feeling is that this is a pretty decent set up. Surprised to see the springs were actually bright green when they arrived but that said VR6 all over them so I'm gueesing I got the right parts.Definetly better ion the corners and not too bumpy on edinburgh streets. The stated lowering of 30mm seems to be about right so I have all the front clearance I need.In fairness, not quite as sporty as the FK coilovers I had before, but, as I said, I needed a compromise I'd recommend this set up to anyone not wishing simply to replace a tired original set up with something just a little firmer.
