ip 0
Since I bought my car it's always had a rythmic ticking sound that changes with RPM. It'e definitely more evident with the bonnet closed and I don't beleve it's coming from the gearbox end of the engine (so thankfully not the chains). Since the valves all sound good too, I'm guessing it must be from the serpentine belt end of the engine. So, not a lot there to choose from there, altternator, water pump ot tensioner I guess? Since the tensioner would generally make a whining noise and the battery chargse fine, maybe it's the water pump? Does any have any experiance of water pump failure? How did it sound?Cheers,ip
ip 0
Hmmm, just noticed the comedy nature of my post's title (ticking noise at tickover). Please try to overlook this.
Timah89 1
Yeah - bought mine in April and identified 'whirring' niose around alternator which progressively got worse. Diagnosed as pulley tensioner but when removed as well as this item being gone water pump bearing was shot too. When removed - use forum guides - vanes had also diappeared off pump. All this is apparently common VR6 issues - new parts c£75 from GSF and took c2hrs to fit along with new belt - now running sweet!Cheers
Karr-Man 0
usually with water pump failure u should be able to see the pulley visibly wobbling
Damo 85 0
water pump went on mine and the week before i got it sorted it started sounding awful, real metallic grinding sound, before that it was a similar sound to noisy lifters (which i also have) its just one big noise my engine :@ definately worth haveing a look . way to tell is run it from cold for a very short period with the belt off. if the sounds gone, you have an idea where to start looking!
