Hi, I'm hoping someone can help.

I have bought the GMAX suspension kit for our VR6. The kit is the 40VW25.

The problem I have is that the garage I took it to says I am missing the top spring cup or spring seat (for the front suspension, rear appear to fit fine)?

The original VW part appears not to fit the top of the spring, in the photo below is one of the front suspension spring and damper and the original VW spring (is it called a seat or cup I'm not sure?). Question is, am I missing a part from this suspension kit and if so what is the correct terminology so I can go back to the supplier!

Thank you!

I fitted my GMAX suspension myself and there was no top plate/cap included, so no I don't think you are missing anything from the kit. The old top plate/cap is re-useable and should fit the new springs. In basic terms it goes back together the way it comes off but you have strip down the old suspension leg and re-use the top cap, bearing, bump stop and dust cover providing they are in good condition. From memory, the top cap has a recess that the spring should sit in. I would recommend replacing both top bearings and top mounts at the very least. They aren't very expensive and if they fail, the whole suspension leg will need to be removed to replace them.

I'm not sure it makes a difference but check that the 40VW 25 kit is the correct one for your car. It was for mine but may have been different on earlier VR's. Have a look and a read through the suspension fitting guide below.

It refers to the top cap and the bearing being fitted after the bump stop and dust cover. Remind your garage to cut down your existing or new bumps stops to allow for the reduced height! There was a note on how much in with my kit.

Last but not least have your tracking AND camber properly checked and adjusted after the new suspension has settled and not straight away! About 100 miles or so should be enough.

The top spring caps changed size about 1995 sometime, later ones are smaller. Looks in the picture like youve got the larger spring plate, is it too big for the top of the spring?

If so then just order ones from vw for a late model vr and should fit fine.

Thanks for that, it's a 1997 VR6 Highline 5 door.

Forgot to add, it's had FK AK coilovers on for the past two years and these are now too harsh hence me getting this kit.

Anyway...this is the kit I bought (though not from this supplier: http://www.dcp-shop.co.uk/buy-car-accessories/product_info.php?products_id=3902

The top spring plate shown in my photo is a brand new part from VW and having searched in my shed I've found the original top cap from the OE front suspension (it is the same cap, identical) and it is slightly too wide to fit the top of the spring. I measured the top of the spring and it's around 75mm, the VW spring cap is 80 so just sits on top of the spring rather than going inside it.

Any ideas??

Thanks again :)

AS JWS VR6 said, It's possible that you have the early top caps. Not sure why the old ones are the same. If poss take your GMAX spring to VW and ask for the latertop cap then check to see if it fits. Were the FK coilovers really that harsh? Eyeball shaking?
