Replacing Stereo/speakers this weekend

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I am replacing the head unit and speakers this weekend and want it to go swimmingly, so is there anything I need to know before I get underway? I am removing the Kenwood head unit and multiplayer, and replacing with a single CD Sony unit. I am replacing all standard speakers with some better ones. I will use the existing wiring. Am I right in thinking I have 4 x 6.5" speakers in my '98 VR6? The rears look to be like components with seperate tweeters. Is that right? Can I replace these with a simple pair of two way speakers? Or do I need to keep components?

Not looking to spends loads of money, which speakers work best in the VR6?

You can replace the components with two ways if you want. I went with components up front and left the originals in the back.

I had to put some additional speaker wire in for the fronts as I have amps and crossovers in the boot. The original speakers have the crossover in the tweeter on the dash, so if you want to run a two way in the door, you'll have to splice the wires that run into the tweeter crossover.

I'd go for components up front, having just a two way in the door so low down won't sound too good.

Also to note - if changing from Kenwood to Sony, you'll have to bugger around with the yellow and red power wires at the back of the head unit, as when I did the same, the sony wouldn't remember any of my radio presets etc...
