beetle.babe 0
Hey guys. I'm new here, sorry if there's a thread, I did a little bit of searching but didn't really find what I was looking for. I have a '95 Jetta VR6. 210,000 kms. Chains are alive, but definitely should be changed. I planned on doing them this weekend, in fact. However, did a compression test (dry) and came up with some unhappy numbers. 1: 155 3: 130 5:1202: 140 4: 120 6: 85Going to do a wet test tomorrow, which should give me some more insight into my problem. But my question really is : Who has rebuilt their VR6, and would they do it again? If it's just a head issue, who has dealt with that? Cost on parts isn't really an issue. Labor and/or difficulty are more of the issue. Success rate as well. Thanks very much.
Bobtrude 0
Depends how good you are at poking around in your engine. I guess things that come in handy are being thorough, accurate and take your time. I had somebody do my chains, but if I lived i canada, i would have done it myself because if u screw up you can alway buy a new engine quite cheap . . . . .
Phat VR6 3
If ones down on compression then it looks like its going to be piston ring. No 6 is ment to be bad for that anyway. As u said oil down the bore should show that up
beetle.babe 0
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't attempt this myself, I have some mechanic friends that I could probably coerce into helping me and/or doing it for me. But a couple of non-mechanic friends that I talked to were really squeamish, telling me that rebuilding a VR6 isn't worth the money. I love my car, and I don't want to replace it. I might have no choice, since the other issue at hand is that fender-bender I was involved in. The other guy's insurance might write my car off and pay me out for it. We'll see what happens.
