jws vr6 0
Ive just finished rebuilding my engine and theres a bit of a ticking noise from the engine now when its running, possibly valve timing out a tooth. Its running fine, just noisey, although ive not tried driving it yet, and the noise seems to be getting quieter the longer i leave it running. What i need to know is where to find the timing mark for the crankshaft. I took the plug out from the top of the gearbox and rotated the engine but couldnt see any marks on the clutch, but the clutch was replaced (genuine VAG) when the engine was fitted and was different fron the old one. Ive looked on the old clutch and there are two large points on the cover about 30-40mm apart, but these dont look like they would be timing marks. Anyone shed any light on this, or offer any other ideas what may be causing the noise?
Phat VR6 3
Timing marks on the other side of the engine on the crank pully! Then take the rocker cover off and put the plates back in the cams? Donno about the inter sproket Its under the covers.Could be your tappits filling up if they where new and you didn't prime them? Depends how long you have had it running for. If its still doing it after 2minutes (at the most) Then its probaly not your tappits. So i donno.
jws vr6 0
I looked on the crank pully when i had the engine out of the car and didnt see any mark but i maybe missed it, i'll check again. Doesnt really sould like a tappet, and i didnt replace them, but its probably worth considering that aswell.Got the car out of the garage and took it for a bit of drive today (only a couple of miles, dont have any power steering fluid yet) and when i came back the noise was pretty much gone. Then started it up again later on and it was back, but not a bad as it was when i first started her up after putting the engine back in.Id forgot how much i like driving the vr6, been driving a mk2 2.0 16v while the vr's been laid up and i like it but the vr is soooooo much better. Much smoother and the low down torque is excellent! Dont remember it being that good before!
Phat VR6 3
If you got not power stearing fluid in it then its probaly the pump that thats making the noise. Probaly not the best idea to run that dry!!!!!. I would fill that up first and see if that stops the noise.Yep your right VR6s are so nice to drive lol. Mines off the road atm for engine rebuild and back to metal respary. Im driving a 1.4 new clio which is about 2 foot off the ground and has a shocking amount of body roll lol. I hate it and can't wait to get the VR back
gav_113 0
when i done my chains, i had no mark on the crank pulley.. just put no,1 at the tdc position.. and lined up all the sprocket marks .. if u had the timing out i doubt there would be a ticking noise ne way?? prob a tappet mine did for a while, had to drive the car and get the oil nice and hot to get rid of the noise.. jws vr6 0
Deffo not the pump, coming from inside the engine somewhere. Yea i know i shouldnt really be driving it but couldnt wait once i got it out of the garage, got a bit excited! lol I was planning on putting a few miles on it to see if the noise goes away before i pull it to bits again. The reason i thought the timing may be out is cos i thought the noise may have been valves touching the pistons slightly, doesnt seem like that though if its getting quieter sometimes. gav_113 0
if the valves were touching there would be more than a tapping noise.. and they would be bent and the car wouldnt run.. so i dont think its that tbh..
jws vr6 0
I had a tdi mk3 golf before and when i put the timing belt on i made an arse of it and the pistons were touching the valves slightly. It ran for a few days the i timed it up properly and it was fine. Valves will only bend if the timing is far enough out. I dont think its the timing any more as its got alot quieter, but would still like to check it again for peace of mind if i can find a mark on the crank.Been driving around in it today, done about 50 miles and it seems to be going good, just a bit noisey. Cant wait to get a few miles on it so i can floor it! And fingers crossed somthing wont break anytime soon
VR6_Absy 0
If the timing marks are out you be forked. If you align the cams correctly, ur at tdc and all the other marks then ur spot on.Maybe sticking followers, if so you can get stuff from wynns to help, worth a try.
