Guest chrisrichards68
Hi guys, I have a 1994 VR6 Golf, the radiator is not blocked, the coolant levels are all fine, the thermostat opens & closes fine & the water pump is working, but the MFA says that my oil temp gets up to 106deg & the water temp gets up to nearly 100deg. Any ideas why??? Am i going to damage the engine?
SankysVR6 1
Are these temps reached with normal griving or when your giving it plenty. As for the coolant temp check if your auxiliary water pump is runnig when the engine is running, and also the same water pump is running for about 10mins after the engine has been switched off.And i assume you have checked the fans on the radiotor are running OK.PS wellcome to the forum. Guest chrisrichards68
Didn't know there was an auxilliary water pump, just thought there was one! Noting continues running after the engine is switched off!.The cooling fans do work fine.It seems to happen during normal driving to be honest. But I have only just got it back on the road. I resuced it from a guy who had left it stanind around for about a year, plus it had a split water pump & did overheat! So I just wonder if something has got damaged. I had a major oil leak fixed the other week & they did a pressure test to make sure the head gasket was ok & it was. I just wonder if the smaller radiator fins are blocked with sludge! Would the water temp also affect the oil temp?PS - thanks for the welcome.
Guest RandomVR6
Hi,I also have an overheating problem in hot weather like this, it is ok in colder weather. Thought id add it into this post as they're related. My car had a overheat problem a couple years ago when the spade fuse for the fan blew and i didnt notice for a day.Since the fix in summertime i notice my temps for oil go to the 105-110 sometimes - with a little poke it goes 110deg. I dont think thats the normal running temp as i had the car for 1 year before that happened and i believe it never left 90 water, 98 oil. What is missing in my car or could be missing that now allows the oil temps so high and water temps too. When they repaired the problem after the overheat - went to 110 water temp and didnt go down so i stopped and found out problem - i agreed to change gasket just in case and the temperature probe was changed, they also mentioned a solenoid that could have been 2 stage and they wernt sure (vw garage) and had placed in a single stage one.Im useless with mechanics if you didnt notice - this is the info i know. matth76 1
No you wont damage the car with those temps. Turboed vr6's run on average 120 degrees all day long, still within safe limits. I agree 106 or 110 is pretty high for just normal driving. Although if it has been left doing nothing for a year that may be why. First thing I would do is get an oil change and full service if you haven't already. The water temp will directly affect the oil temp. The higher the water temp the higher the overall engine temp and oil temp. The water acts as a 'cooler'. Worth checking the radiator properly and make sure the water pump and thermostat are working 100%.I wouldn't trust a vw main dealer - get it to a specialist like the phirm or stealth... far far more experienced and half the price.
