Is this normal cold weather "starter" problems...?

Recommended Posts

On the morning when it snowed the other day I went to start my car and it seems to have developed slightly more "lethargic" engine turn-over noise when I start it up. Car runs absolutely fine and very smooth once started, including when cold..it is only the process of actually starting it up when the engine turns over. Its just slower to turn over. I don't think its the starter motor as I had that replaced a year ago. Is this a common problem when it gets slightly colder?? I didn't notice this last winter. Could it be battery related or something else? I've only noticed this since the day it snowed quite a bit down here in the south on wed hence I think its cold weather related. However today was quite a bit warmer and the noise is still there.

I'd have thought the cold would explain it: A cold battery will deliver less grunt, your oil will be thicker and therfore take more effort to move and finally, for know, the serpentine belt will be both slightly smaller and stiffer again adding to the turning resistance.

At least the cold means more ummph when you're running :-D

i would say its the battery mate, mine did exactly that, bout 3 weeks after it gave up the ghost

also at the mo as i workin 4 vw i would ay over the last 8 weeks i must have sold 30 batterys so i would lean 2wards that mate, get it checked,i used our batt checker at work and it printed off my batt was 17% efficent lol

As I is an egineer and have an involvement with Power and DC - Yes mate.

Basically the cold slows the excitation of the battery block. If the battery is old, low in electrolite etc then you get the slow turn over aspect, as you view it.

You have 2 options. If it is a refill type - ensure it is topped up and allow it the opportunity to rechage. (Steady drive everything switched off kinda thing).

There are no guarantees on this once a battery reaches a certain state it becomes unrecoverable (almost like the battery fills with sludge so capacity becomes limited). The battery may continue to work especially in warmer weather but it is on its way out. All batteries have a finite life cycle!

The difficult aspect is assigning a time frame to that period. (Lots of factors)

So it will continue to function for a while and will be sluggish, in this weather.

You will have to bite the biscuit and replace the block! You just have some time to do it! so subject to it falling over and additional cold weather it will be fine for a little while! Just not sure how little mate ;)

Cheers for your replies guys. I was leaning towards it being the battery. It was slightly better today as its a bit warmer.

Not really worried about it just didn't want to get stranded one day.

Hows your search for a new car going Steve? Weren't you looking for a 200sx? Any luck?
