vr6newcomer 1
Hi guys, after my rolling road results, i was driving home real depressed, pondering my next move, then the car just turned off while driving, is turning over but not firing, a.a ( alcoholics anonymous i believe) twat turned up after 3 hours and said, its yer cambelt guv...obviously the first priority is to get this fault sorted, on the dash red oil light and battery light are on, oil light flashes when trying to start, wondering if anyone had any ideas? im probably gonno take it down to phirm im thinking...cheers guys n gals
katconcarne 0
you dont have a cambelt, only chain. Could be a tensioner gone allowing it to jump teeth which would cause valve damage and stop it from running. It could be cam timing out that gave you the low bhp figure at the rr day.Hope you get it sorted,Katie (@)
vr6newcomer 1
i know theres no cambelt katie, but i knew that long before i bought a vr, just shows the knowledge of the mechanic that turned up, i should have heard some sort of noise if this was the case no? mk3anni 0
If its turning over and not firing i doubt its the cam chain or anything associated. I could be wrong but i'd expect some sort of unpleasent sound if the chain had failed. As ever with such things i'd suggest VAG-COM being your first step, see if anything comes up.Its going to be either no fuel, or no spark. Can you hear the fuel pump, or smell fuel in the exhaust??? If not then it could be the fuel pump relay. If you can then its more likely to be a lack of spark, which could be a number of things. Its odd that it cut out while you where driving though. Has the car had a re-map?? The reason I ask is that my car did the same thing and it turned out to be a slightly bent leg on the new chip was making a bad contact.Start with VAG-COM
VR6_Absy 0
From my own experience Kat could be right :-( When my guides went the engine would spin but absolutely no sign of life.Good luck bud [-)
apd 0
to chuck some light on to your problem....i was driving along in my old vr and IT just died.turned over as like yours.fuel pump died.to test get it out of the tank, which you will have to do anyway is its f**cked.put a direct feed to it in a tray of water[safety] and see if it pumps. matth76 1
Vr6newcomer didn't have any noise I believe so can't be chain or tensioner related. I would agree with Steve and say its something related to the spark plugs or fuelling. Did your car get started eventually or did you get it towed by the aa? I might be wrong but I think the oil light will come on when you stall or the engine dies, so not necessarily oil related as such. Was the rolling road at Stealth? Was your power curve smooth and what power/torque did you make?
vr6newcomer 1
no matey the r/r was in gloucester, a load of us went down from here, there is a results thread up, im too ashamed to give u my figures, but its not good, believe me, went thru my bentley c.d and i think the fuel pumps not going, so well see if its that in morning
apd 0
4got to say-you need a pump off any vr variant as if not it will underfuel.
mk3anni 0
Or apparently a mk2 16v pump can be used as it pumps more fuel than the VR but I've never bothered to check this!!
apd 0
only the vr pump has a 4bar pressure rating,so owt else would underfuel at high revs.
Jk* 0
MAF CHECK THE MAF!!! Sounds like what happened to me about 2 weeks ago. The AA said fuel pump, this that and the other, turned out to be the MAF which was diagnosed by VAG-COM. But you can check it just by removing it and having a look at the sensor inside...worth it for about 10mins work! These were my symptoms: - Was running rough prior and low on performance- Had a strong smell of fuel in the engine bayThe day it broke:- Went to start the car and it didnt start, then it did, drove down the road about 15 meters and died, started it again and immediately died with the oil light flashing. Then i thought ill give it some more revs, still just cut out.- Then it wouldnt even start and the oil light was flashing. Checked the relays too. Hope this is some help. A new MAF is about £70 from GSF when you return your old one.
vr6newcomer 1
hmmn, interesting, jk, sounds like the problem, what does the chip inside actually look blown?
Jk* 0
Basically its a sensor that IRRC sticks out from the right. When the air passes from the induction/filter it pushes the sensor down and completes allowing a circuit to be made. If the sensor is split or to far from the circuit then it will need replacing. Mine was in two pieces and the connection was not made, hence why it ran sometimes and not others until it finally died completely. Hope it helps.
