28v6r 0
Okay Birthday Boy as it's you, your wish will be granted.....Just this once mind!! I'm presuming that you've fitted suspension before Yes?? Okay then may be not .... On the front Struts you will need to relieve the tension on the nut you refer to, by using coil compressors, otherwise things tend to come off with a MIGHTY Bang!! !amazed make sure that if you go for the **BANG** method that all your digits and heads are clear of the strut tower otherwise you may loose one or so... :@ Anyway, once the coil has been collapsed the nut can be removed, if you've a digital camera it may be benificial to take photos of the tower to note markings and positions. Once the nut is removed, the strut & coil should drop free, hold in position until you've compared the spring position etc with the new spring and strut. Reversal should be the opposite of what you've just carried out. As to the "Thinner" nut, Are you referring to the gland nut on the actual strut itself, and that you intend to fit an "Insert" rather than an actual strut, as I'm not sure with out seeing it, what you talk about.Hopefully that's some help to you, but personally I'd wait until the day after, as you may incur injury on your birthday therefore not a good result... but it's up to you... !dodge Good Luck. Pittuf 0
Cheers matey, no I have never removed suspension before. As it was I took my life into my hands and marched on regardless. I had inadvertanly bought the thinner nut from vw so no removal from the old strut was required, result!I took the big nut off the new fk's firstly using spring compressors, but finding out that there ain't that much bang in em, I didn't bother with the second one, (still got enough fingers to hold a pint with tonight 8o) ,)I fitted the new top mount, new bearing and new thinner nut, its called a threaded bush by VW, incedently.Whacked the whole lot back on the car and now she's dropped a mighty 50mm at the front, wahay no rubbibg either! Its taken me quite a while to do the fronts so I am gonna leave the rears till tomorrow, which will be fun with a hangover :@ Just a quicky, I didn't actually do the threaded bush (technical eh) up a huge amount, with a socket untill the strut rotated, but the retaining bolt in the engine bay has been done up tight, will this be ok, or should I definately take the whole lot out again tomorrow and crank it up abit more, shouldn't take so long now I know what i'm doing.
