Just as an update, I've decided just to put some mesh over the end, will be welding it up later.
I've got some stainless steel wire mesh thats 6mm x 6mm. Perfect stuff really.
My mom hasn't noticed just yet, but the £20 stainless steel bird feeder is 4.5 inches shorter than before
