I had a similar problem to this a while back and it turned out to be a faulty ignition switch cutting power when returning from the starting position to the running position.

i had a similar problem last year with my vr, started up then died on random occasions. After a lot of messing it turned out to be the ignition switch, it was losing connection briefly when returning the key from the start position to the run position, i changed it and not had a problem since.
