  1. My V6 Sharan with the multivalve motor started then stalled. Ross Tech diagnostics gave cam timing improbable fault codes. Compression test confirmed valve timing problem. Pulled motor and gearbox out and dismantled motor. The small sprocket which drives the camshaft timing chain has lost all it's teeth. They have worn away. Motor has only done 133690 km. Can anyone tell me

    1) what caused this to happen?

    2) what do I need to replace apart from both chains, the sprocket on the intermediate shaft that has no teeth, the guides and tensioners

    3) is there an upgrade to the timing chain system that I should install?

    4) how do I stop this happenning again?

    5) Do I have to do anything else to the motor?

Any help / advise will be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Alan

  2. Mine is behind the battery on the left hand side. If you take the battery out you have reasonable access to it.. Mines a 2001 V6 Sharan (AYL multi-valve motor with manual gearbox)

  3. Dear Pete,

On erWin I found how to test the Hall sensors and they appear to be OK.

I then reset the Vagcom fault codes and turned the motor over again to see what fault codes came up. I got the same codes for the 2 cam sensors.

Whilst I was turning it over it (a) sounded like it backfire a few times and (B) like there was no compression. So I ran a compression test. Ooops the pressures from 1cyl 1 to 6 are 50, 75, 70, 50 48 and 75 P.S.I. respectively.

My guess is that the timing chain has jumpes a few teeth. Your thoughts or comment please.

I now need to take the cam cover off which is not so easy on the Sharan, the motor sits half under the dashboard and you have to take the front bumper off so I can physically check the camshaft timing.

I am open to comments and suggestions from anyone.

    Thanks

    Alan

  4. Dear Pete,

Thank you for your response on timing chains. I have a few questions perhaps you can answer. Sometimes the badging in South Africa is different to the UK, so

    1) we got the Sharan VR6 which, as far as I can make out, was the 2 valve per cyl engine and then the V6 Sharan which is the multivalve engine. Apart from the cyl heads are there any other differences?

    2) I understand when you have the gearbox out to do the chains it makes sense to do the clutch, but why did you suggest changing the cylinder head gasket?

    3) You also said upgrading to the Mk4 Poly guides. How do I find out about this modification? Can I just go to VW and ask for the parts?

    4) I read a lot of the comments on various threads about the timing chains and listened to the clips and I think my chain is rattling, but I need to get my engine to start again to listen more carefully.

    5) My motor has stopped and the VAG COM codes are 16725 (G40) and 16730 (G163) camshaft position sensor, implausible signal. I have now found via erWin how to test these sensors and the wiring and I found on one of the websites how to clean them. If you have any advice on this it would be appreciated. I did post a thread on this but I think I posted it in the wrong place.

    Thanks for the help.

  5. My V6 started and then stalled and would not start thereafter. I bought the Ross Tech Vagcom interface and it has 3 errors:

    3 Faults Found:

16725 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40): Implausible Signal

    P0341 - 35-00 - -

16730 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G163): Implausible Signal

    P0346 - 35-00 - -

16497 - Intake Air Temp. Sensor (G42): Signal too High

    P0113 - 35-00 - -

The workshop manual I have has shown me where to find the 2 camshaft sensor and the wiring diagram, but not how to test them or how to repair this problem.

    Can anyone help with:

    1) Where I can buy a genuine workshop manual that would tell me exactly how to fix this problem?

    2) advice on how to test these sensors?

    3) how to fix this problem?

    4) as I understand it the V6 motor is a 2.8l 6 cylinder multivalve whereas the VR6 is different in that it is not multivalve. Is this correct? are there other differences or can I use any info I find on a VR6 motor on my motor?

    Any assistance will be appreciated.

    Thanks

  6. I have a 2001 Sharan V6 which had a short circuit in the tail light wiring. The harness is damaged and the Multi function control unit fuse box has been badly damaged. So far I have not been able to get a replacement unit. The part no on my unit is 7M3 962-258M. Later models used 7M3 962258S and then therafter 7M3 962258AD. These same numbers are used on the SEAT Alhambra. The Ford Galaxy uses a part number YM21 14B205CA.

Can anyone help by answering the following questions:

    1. What is the difference between the M S and AD versions?

    2. Can I upgrade to the later version ?

    3. I have been able to locate a unit with part no 7M0 962258F which comes out of a VR6 1999. Can I use this?

If no one has an answer can anyone advise me where I can get this info from.

    Any assistance will be appreaciated.

    Thanks

    Alan

  7. I have a 2001 V6 Sharan which had an electrical short. The end result being a badly burnt control unit which forms part of the fuse box and relay assembly. The part number on the unit is 7M3 962258M. This box is manufactured by Siemens. Does anyone have a circuit diagram for this Control Unit. The replacement part is going to cost me more than 10% of the value of the car. Other wise can anyone advise where I can find a second hand unit.

    Any assistance will be appreciated.
