  1. +1 for crank sensor, had the same on my old VR, to begin with just wouldnt start sometimes when hot then eventually started cutting out on me. Replaced a good few parts befor i got to the crank sensor, HT leads, temp sensor, etc. Right nightmare of a fault as your never sure its fixed till it breaks down again :( Had a few embarrassing breakdowns in mine before i got it fixed.

  2. Cheerrs for the offer but not looking at buying one at the moment, just trying to find a little out about turboing so im a bit more clued up about it for if/when i decide to go for it.

Had a quick skim over your build thread the other day, some nice work there!

  3. Thanks guys, had a look on garrets page and its cleared up most of the Qs. Might order a copy of that book at some point too.

Anyone had any experiance with the cheap turbos on german ebay? I'll post up a link in a min.

  4. May be a catalyst but seems a little high for that. Was the CO fluctuating a lot while they were doing the test. It will usually go alot higher than 1 if theres a dodgy sensor.

  5. What were the readouts on the emmissions printout, can usually get a good idea from that whats up?

CO reading up to about 0.8 or 0.9 % is usually a nakered cat, can sometimes be fixed as above with some fuel additive an a good thrash.

Anything above that an more likley a 02 sensor or MAF or plugs etc.

If it failed on the lambda reading its usually just a small leak in the exhaust somewhere.

Have a look on the printout and post up the readouts.

  6. Can anyone recommend a webpage or a book that i can use to get some knowledge abou turbos. Been reading up on a few old threads on here an all the abbriviations and numbers are jibberish to me.

I know how they work its just all the talk abou A/Rs and T3, T4 and GT35s and stuff like that i dont understand. Quite fancy trying a diy turbo build at some point and would like to know what im doing.

Did a quick search on google but couldnt find what i was looking for :@

  7. After about 4 years away from VR ownership just agreed tonight to buy a mk3 GTi with just about everything needed for a vr6 conversion on a pallet.

Some pics from the sale ad...

Getting the car with no seats as the current owner has already sold the seats

Started out life as an 8valve and the current owner converted to an 16valve, which he is removing prior to me picking up the car, which will give some time to get the engine and give a once over.

Was resprayed about 18 months ago in BMW Estoril Blue so bodywork is mint :)

Dont have a good history with project cars so hopefully this one will go a bit better :S

Anyone tell me if theres anything to watch out for doing the conversion that i might not hav thought of?

  8. Ive put a crank sensor in mine yesterday of an old engine i have lying around and had it for a small run and seems ok so far, but the i thought the plug leads had fixed it till it died on me in the middle of town at lunch time! :$ So i'll give it a good run over the weekend and see hou it goes. Fingers crossed!

  9. Yea mine cuts out aswell, but that only started donig that recently, starting probs been going on for a few months tho.

So far ive replaced engine temp sensor and fuel pump relay, and plug leads but also had a slight misfire under load which the new leads cured.

A crank sensor has a resistance across it,and resistance is affected by heat, and problem only happens when hot. And if the crank sensors knackered then engine doesnt know its turning so no spark or injection. Deffo worth a try since i have one lying around, got quoted about £80 + vat from dealers tho.

Another theorey is lambda sensor knackered causing overfuelling and flooding the engine, but no access to vagcom yet to check codes so not sure. And never had a chance to have a proper look at the car when the faults been happening!

Search on here for crank sensor, theres a few with the same fault so fingers crossed! And theres another thread going at the moment with similar prob aswell.
