  1. No, I didn't mean that at all. 3k-VR6. 6k-4motion.

Thanks for that everyone. I don't quite know what to do now' date=' on the one hand I'd like a replacement VR6, but the 4 motion looks good too. I would rather spend 3-ish than 6+ish on a motion, but ... hmm, I suppose I will just have to keep looking and see what comes up ...

youd want to spend 3grand ish on a 4motion??? bloody hell mate your having a laugh if thats what you mean.

  2. Hi Mike

Thanks. 40m is no problen :-), I don't know ehere I'll be viewing yet ...

No, it's not a typo. Imported turbo MR2s have a number of revisions. This MR2 started off as a rev1 (2litres and about 200bph). The V6 (3 litres) was a professional swap from a Camry. It's much more driveable and quiet. I can tootle around all day in 4th if I want, and power come in from about 1600. But, onb the other hand it has an ACoustic Induction System which from 4000 ish makes a *wonderful* noise. 200bhp/200lb/ft so it's not *that* quick compared to a later standard VR6 but I feel the speed more! And I took it on a drift day recently which is something I couldn't have done with my VR6.

hi mate' date=' i would offer if you fancy driving 40miels to pick me up ;) altho id probably not be much good tbh

  3. When I came to trade mine in I was pretty horrified how much it had depreciated. But now kind of thinking of another, I agree with you, I'm amazed what they can be picked up for. I may listen to others and perhaps try different suspension, but the ones I've seen so far tend to have been lowered too, which doesn't do anything for me.

I liked the kind of 'zinnnnnng' from the exhaust btw, which was still the original one at 135k.

What, apart from here, are good places to find them?

I wouldn't say the noise is "awesome" btw' date=' but I liked it, and it's understated.

Also, I think the ride is ok, not too soft, it's a saloon type car after all.

Obviously a matter of opinion, but what else can you buy for 3k that looks and sounds like a VR6 engined Dub? with a stainless pipe it sounds like a far more exotic car

  4. I had a VR6 for several year until last year when the HG went and quoted with an 11.5hr repair time I traded it in for a V6 MR2. I love the MR2 but I would prefer a saloon for daily driving, with boot, seats, place to put my bike etc. It would be sensible to buy a 1.6/1.8 Golf kind of thing, but I do miss my VR6.

I'm based in the Matlock, Derbyshire area, and also Sussex. Would anyone be able to come view VR6es with me, as I'm knowledge free when it comes to mechanics etc?

  5. I had periodic ABS problems. I also several times had problems with leads and plugs. The latter just from going to crap garages that didn't put the right ones in. When buying (I thik the buyers guide on here looks pretty good btw) there should be no lumpiness at idle. From 29k to 100k I found it very reliable, it was from about 100 or 110k that things atsrted failing from age.

  6. Hi everyone

I had a VR6 until last year, when the head gasket went at 135k. I've read (i don't know where) that they are susceptible to this. I was also quoted quite a price (as an 11.5hr job) to do it, so I sadly traded it in for an MR2. I'm pining for one again, though, as a day car, in addition to my MR2s. I must say unlike others above I didn't have a problem with mpg. I did find that past 100k things were starting to outlive their best before (I had the car from 29k, and it was well maintained). I would suggest getting something with FSH, but probably not necessarily a mileage < 100k (because *I'll* be looking < 100k and don't want to compete!! :-)).

  7. Steve, thanks for that suggestion. What kind of cost would that be, having it done at a garage?

Matt, I don't yet have a break down of how that price works but a big chunk is the book says 11.5hrs labour. Plus VAT. That just on its own is > 500. It may be that as the car

uses oil I've said to also look at the valves. The whole thing is a shame because apart from the hg it's a nice car (I'm only 2nd owner and I've had it for 100k) and one which I was or am looking forward to trying on tracks. An alternative is to px it against a 1.8 GTI T, but would cost me quite a lot and I wouldn't risk a shiny new(ish) car on a track ... :}. Just looking at your signature, where did you extar 15-20 bph come from?

  8. Hi All

I've hydrocarbons in my reservoir water, and need a new head gasket.

I winced when I heard 1k to fix. Well, tomorrow's another day.

But I'm still wincing! :} An option was to sell the car, but if I did that I'd buy a much more expensive car. As I want to get into track days reasonably seriously (going every few weeks) I'd rather use the old VR6. While the head's off, what affordable performance improvements can be made - I'm talking hundreds rather than thousands?
