  1. Oh dear no. I got someone to do all that stuff already. Bottom-end reconned fully, new rings and shells. No regrind of crank needed! And head done, new valve stem seals etc

Now just need it rebuilding properly. Enjoyed taking it to bits but that's as far as my tiny skill level could go.

Thx for info, rung headshop but guy was out on a job and not rung me back yet. Will try em again mon.

    Cheers

    Dave.

  2. for the record.

average over the last 3500miles 27.8 and I drive pretty quick most the time.

Hard/round town trip never less than 22mpg and driving at best 48mpg!! I had this last week on the motorway while driving through traffic at steady 55ish. Stayed around that mark for miles. Does bout 39-40mpg in 5th at 30 mph. I'm sure this is incorrect.

Spec of my car. 97 Highline, chipped, decat, BMC filter, Ashley 6-2-1 manifold, 15" BBS's, pretty much always use shell v-power. seems to give the best Mpg. Have certainly noticed that the "lame" driving speed mpg has gone through the roof since the decat. Was getting no more than 40 before.

  3. I had an ashley 6-2-1 manifold fitted earlier this year and had had my old crappy 6-2-1 manifold off several times to be rewelded. But, the problem came when putting the new manifold on because, as mentioned above, the exhaust stubs on the head kept breaking when being tightened up.

What should have been 4 hours, took 9.

Hope this is of some help.

  4. Hi there.

I've modified this post as I should explain I know very little about cars etc. And although this question may appear stupid, I really don't know how to do this but for somwething so simple, i'd rather learn than pay someone and get charged through the nose for it!!

All I want to do is get a wire from the engine bay in to the car and apparently I can do this via the clutch cable through the bulk head... Is this correct ? ... because I can't see a way through.

    any thoughts would be great.

    btw, it's a MRk 3 golf Vr6.

    cheers

  5. Hi there.

Been a member here for a year or so but am pretty quiet. just read stuff mostly because I don't know much. But i've got a question that maybe someone can help me with.

I have a reconditioned VR6 engine that is totally in bits. I had the head and bottom end done earlier this year and was gonna get the engine put in my car but i need someone to rebuild the engine for me. I was going to do it myself as I took it to bits but with serious lack of time and an even more serious lack of knowledge(!) i'm trying to find someone who would come recommended to do this work, then i will get my usual garage to fit it for me.

Does anyone here have any contacts in the manchester/northwest area?

    Any help would be great.

    My car is a 1997 VR6 Highline.

  7. Hi there.

I'm no expert, as you'll gather (haha) and I'll try to be as clear as possible.

I own a P-reg Golf VR6 Hignline. I have just bought, as a project for myself, an N-reg Golf VR6 Highline engine. Done about 90K. All running fine except value seal leaking on #5. I've stripped it down as far as head off and bout to take off the crank etc.

My plan was to recon the bottom and top half, and then do a swap over in to my 1997. Now, i was reading that there are differences between the OBD-1 and OBD-2 and here is my question. Can I not put this engine in my 1997? Or will it be ok. What are the differences between the 2 engine designs? I know the throttle housings are different between the 2 engines. This is what I have just found out and this is why I'm suddenly concerned. I'm gonna have to use loads of bits off my existing engine to do the swap over. IE, inlet manifold and injectors etc...

Any advice wud be great before I start spending loads of cash on getting the block engineered.

    Cheers.

    Dave. %-6
