  1. The radiator was getting warm so hopefully its just the fuse. Is that the one underneath the expansion tank?

And after filling up with coolant I did leave the expansion cap off for a while but that was all as far as bleeding is concerned. Is there something else I should be doing?

Thanks for the comments so far!

  2. I think my head gasket is a goner!

A few weeks ago my VR overheated, steam pouring out from under the bonnet. It seemed like a classic thermostat problem (top pipe hot, bottom pipe cold, fan not running) so I've replaced the stat.

I've just been out running the car and the dash coolant light is flashing and I still have a hot top rad pipe and a cold bottom one, and the fan seems to never come on. It looks like there is a drip from the exhaust pipe too! eek!

With 140k on the clock is my VR finally heading to the car scrap heap in the sky?!? *cries*

  3. Hi all,

The earth braid between my VR's starter motor and the solenoid is completely shot so I need a new starter motor (tried replacing the braid but failed misterably!).

Found the following on ebay.....is it decent? worth the money? are there cheaper alternatives?

  4. Hi All,

I seem to be hitting quite a few problems with my VR recently. Its coming up to 110k but surely I can get a fair bit more out of it??

My latest problem is a little worrying. For the last couple of months my ABS light has been flicking on/off (mostly on though). From reading the forums here I know this is a common issue on the Golf but have not been 'too' worried about it as doesnt it just mean that I have no ABS at the moment? (still needs sorting tho)

Anyway, some mornings I will start the car up and the ABS light will be off. What then happens while driving along (Sometimes) is that I hear a strange rattling/vibrating sound from down behind the dash on the drivers side, so possibly behind the bulkhead. I can only describe the sound as being like a drill going into a wall but quieter! This might happen for a few seconds at a time. I've found that while this rattling is occurring if I attempt to press the break pedal it actually doesn't really press down at all and I can feel the vibration through the pedal. Oh, and the car doesn't break either!

The ABS light will come on at some point. This only seems to happen during the first 5 mins or so of driving the car.

I will have to take it to get sorted out soon as its getting dangerous to drive now, but was wondering if this is something anyone has encountered before?

Thanks for any assistance and sorry for the longish post!

    Cheers.

  5. Hi all,

Sounds like I have a wheel bearing on the way out on the drivers side (not sure if its front or rear yet). At least I think its the bearing! There tends to be a bit less/more whirring when I turn to the left/right.

However its only started happening recently and I don't hear it everytime I drive.

My question is....is it ok to run on it for a while or should I get it sorted ASAP?

    Cheers for any info.

    Deano.

  6. Thanks for the info.

I think I will get some decent components up front first. Will give the Infinity 6500's a listen although I've read they can be a bit bright at times? I can run them and a sub off my amp. Can always upgrade the amp later if a bit more power is needed.

Only problem is, I'm not sure I want to lose a load of boot space to a sub!

  7. Cheers for the replies.

I already have a Kenwood 4 channel amp, which is rated at about 50w rms for each channnel, and 2 pretty old HU's to choose from, a Kenwood 7080R or Sony M500R. Not sure which to use yet.

Music wise, I would be playing mainly dance music and like a tight punchy bass sound, rather than rumbling bass. Ideally I would listen to some speakers in the shops, but obviously some best ones arent always available!
