  1. Cheers for that fella - very useful.

Looks like I need a few extra parts. If I can find a 'donor' car at the scrappy, is it difficult to get all the bits off the back seats without breaking anything? I can't quite figure out how the plastic bits with the release mechanism on them detach from the tubes. Or is it easier just to buy everything?! If so, any idea how much I'm looking at for parts?

    Thanks again for the tips.......

  2. Hello all

Unlike my VR, my Mk3 GTi doesn't have rear head rests. I've been given a spare set from a mate - has anyone ever done the 'conversion'?

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that the column they slot in to is in present in all Mk3 rear seats - it's just the clip on the top that needs fitting?

    Cheers....

  3. Evening all

Just got back from a 2 hour trip in the VR. Turned the engine off to hear what I can only describe as a bubbly gurgling noise behind the dash - almost like the kind of noise you hear when a radiator in your house needs bleeding. Also sounded like something else was running - maybe the aux water pump?

Popped the bonnet and all seemed well - could hear the noise towards the back of the engine bay. No temp warning lights, leaks, spillages or anything. Footwells were dry.

The only thing that was different about today was that I took her out for a long run on the motorway in the strong midday sunshine, so she's got hotter and done a lot more mileage than she would normally do in a day.

Any ideas? Didn't like the noise!

    Cheers....

  4. Get ready for a misfire! Actually, mine looked like that for 6 months or so before it finally failed, but that was during the dry summer months. It was toast as soon as it started to get a bit damp.

Complete lottery - it may go tomorrow or it might soldier on for months. I got stuck in a car park when mine went - 4 cylinders was not enought to get the poor old girl up the hill! Make sure you buy the replacement coil from GSF - much cheaper.

On the upside, your VR will feel like a beast after you have replaced the coil!

  5. Evening all..

Was driving home the other day and the trusty old girl started to misfire. Pulled over and managed to ascertain that cylinders 1 and 6 were not firing. Closer inspection revealed a nice crack in the coilpack.

So I got a tow home, left her overnight and started her up in the morning - no problems. Just trying to figure out why there is no problem on a cold start. Could it be that as the coilpack warms up and expands, the crack get bigger and lets moisture in causing a misfire?

Also, can anyone explain to a mechanical dumbass why a coilpack fault would lead to 2 cylinders not firing? Just curious!

    Cheers...

  6. Your last sentence is bang on - I read too much on here and then go looking for problems!! I guess I should just accept that VRs use oil and forget it. Other than high oil consumption, car runs like a dream.

Just out of interest, how much (roughly) are you looking at for head work, including new stem seals etc?

  7. I'm curious - what's does a PCV do? I know it stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation, but that's all I know!

My VR burns a fair bit of oil and I sometimes get a burnt oil smell through the vents in the cabin. Somebody once said it might be a dodgy PCV valve, but I've never looked in to it.

    Sorry to threadjack....

  8. Hello all,

My VR has got a bit lumpy on idle and is also trying to stall when dipping the clutch in order to slow down to a standstill.

First guess is engine speed sensor, but not having a clue about 'things under the bonnet', I'm not sure where to look. Does anyone have any pics?

Also, the problem is intermittent - is there any chance that the sensor could be dirty / badly fitted, or do they just tend to give up the ghost completely?

I get a bit confused with the idle thing - everyone plumps for dirty ISV, but my car is a late R-reg, so OBDII I and no ISV I guess? Not really sure how the idle is controlled in that case - presumably the ECU takes care of it?? !dodge

    Any tips appreciated. Cheers....

  9. Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a Passat 1.8 20V Turbo Sport as a second car / daily driver. Saw a nice clean example in a garage today - 68k, full VW history, 2 previous owners, recent cam belt etc., so I it took it for a test drive.

Has anyone driven one? I thought it felt slow, but I couldn't work out if it was just the fact that I have been used to the power of my VR.

Should the turbo give a pronounced surge at the top end? If so, what rev range? I wasn't expecting earth-shattering performance, but I did think I would feel a bit more from 150bhp and 0-60 in 8.6s.

I supose I really need to test drive another one and see what that's like. The 0-60 times are only approx 1.6s apart, but it felt very different.

    Any words of wisdom?

PS: Is there an easy way to test wehther or not the turbo is working properly? I guess diagnostics tests would be in order?

  10. Cripes. That sounds expensive! Anyone got any idea how much you would expect to pay for an independant to sort it out?

Also, are there any other jobs to consider whilst it's being done? I know the chains replaced on this motor about 5k ago - should the valve stem seals have been done then? :?

  11. My mate's 98 VR6 Golf has always used a lot of oil, but doesn't seem to smoke and there aren't any obvious leaks uderneath the car. Can sometimes smell oil in th cabin though..

Anyway, last week it started missing, so we whipped out the spark plugs and found that the bottom left one (sorry for the non-technical description!) was fouled with oil. All the others were fine. Not sure exactly what this means, but I know it's not great news!!!

Can anyone give me any pointers?

Thought I remembered someone posting about this and mentioning rocker cover gaskets?? Could this explain why oil is fouling the plug in question? And could it leak oil without depositing it on the floor?!! ?! Or is there another explanation?

Would like to have a look over it but not really sure where to start.

    Any advice appreciated..

    Cheers

  12. Definitely go for the Syntha Silver semi synth.

My car (97 VR with 90k) burned 1.7 litres per 1000 miles on the fully synthetic Syntha gold. Switched to semi silver and now do 0.5 litres per 1000, which is acceptable according to the handbook.

VW recommend the fully synthetic, which is fine for a brand new VR, however when the miles rack up and the engine loosens, the lower viscosity means it p*sses through the engine.

Just stick your finger in the pipe and see if its slimy - I've seen highish mileage VRs running fully synth and oil is literally dripping out the back! If so, change to semi and see what happens.

Also, get someone to follow you and see what colour the smoke really is. I always end up trying to convince myself that my car is smoking at this time of year - even though I know it's condensation due to the damp!

You could also check the plugs and see if there is any oil fouling on them. This can mean problems with valves / rings / oil seals etc. Don't panic yet though - you may just need to switch oil!

    :P
